Airfield Maintenance |
The central component that ensures both the safety and overall esthetics of
the Santa Monica Airport is the Airfield Maintenance Section.
Airfield Maintenance maintains the airport's runway & taxiway lighting systems,
vehicle access gates, storm water drainage system, office and hangar space,
landscaping and irrigation systems -just to name a few of their daily responsibilities.
In addition Airfield Maintenance is responsible for the opening & closing
of the airports single runway for runway & taxiway projects and for the
bi-monthly vacuum sweeping of the aircraft operations area from 0300 - 0700 every other Friday morning.

Airfield Lighting
 |
One of the more important responsibilities of the Airfield Maintenance Staff is the reliable
operation of the runway & taxiway lighting systems. Bulbs burn out, lightening shorts wires,
pilots clip breakaway lights and signs. It is the airfield lighting technician who boldly goes where few go.
Though the airport lighting system is inspected several times a day; it's always a good idea
for pilots to report damaged or inoperative runway/taxiway lights to Santa Monica ATCT.

Airport Vehicle Gates
|
Airfield Maintenance routinely does repair and maintenance work on vehicle gates securing
the perimeter of the Santa Monica Airport. Inoperative gates should always be reported
to an SMPD Airport Service Officer or Maintenance Technician. Though our Maintenance
Staff or a general contractor repairs gates, the proximity card key access program is
administered by the Airport Services Officers & the airport's Front Desk in the Administration Building.

Landscaping & Irrigation
 |
|
The Santa Monica Airport is the 2nd largest open space area in the city with over 227 acres
of land, much of which is covered by foliage. The vast green space on the Santa Monica Airport
keeps Airfield Maintenance crews on the go. There are a wide variety of annual & perennial
plants that need upkeep around the airport. Any number of Palms, Ficus, Red Oleander,
White Oleander, Juniper, Ice Berg Plants, Cypress & Wild Flowers grow in many areas of
the airport, covering any grounds that are not usable to aircraft or vehicle movement areas.
Maintenance is constantly fertilizing, watering and pruning these green areas to maintain the
beauty of the property.
