SUMMER 2009: LEVEL DESCRIPTIONS

Parent and Me
(ages 6 months to 3
years) |
|
This class is designed for parent and child
interaction. Class focuses on developing the
child’s comfort in the water through games
and songs designed to initiate the child to
bubble blowing, putting their face in the
water, floating and kicking on front and
back with the assistance of the parent and
instructor. Note: Infants must wear water
proof diapers under their suits while in the
water |

Pre School Aquatics: (Tadpole)
for children 2 to 4 years old |
|
This introductory level creates a transition
between our Parent and Me and Polliwog
classes. Children must be able to enter the
water with out a caretaker. In this level,
children develop water confidence and safe
practices in and around the water. Students
will work on introductory aquatic skills
like bubble blowing, floating, kicking, arm
actions and gliding on front and back, all
with the support of an instructor. |

Level 1:
Water Exploration (Polliwog)
for children 5 years and older
|
|
Class focuses on child becoming comfortable
in the water. Skills taught include bubble
blowing, underwater exploration, front &
back glides, front & back kick, and front &
back float and arm actions. All skills
include instructor support. |
|
Level 2: Primary Skills (Guppy)
for children 5 years and older |
|
Participant must have mastered Polliwog
skills and must be comfortable taking
directions from an instructor as well as
going underwater with out assistance before
entering this class. Skills taught include;
independent floating and recovering to a
standing position, glides, kicking and
combined arm and leg actions on front and
back. This class requires the participant to
accomplish each skill independently.

Level 3A:
Stroke Readiness (Minnow A)
|
|
Participant must have mastered all Guppy
skills including: floating and gliding
independently on their front and back and
holding their breath underwater for at least
5 seconds before entering this level. Skills
taught include; coordinating the front
crawl, rotary breathing, elementary
backstroke and dolphin kicking, and an
introduction to deep water swimming and
diving. |

Level 3B: Stroke Readiness (Minnow B) |
|
Participant must have mastered Minnow A
skills including: swimming 5 body lengths of
front crawl with side breathing, elementary
backstroke kick and dolphin kick before
entering this class. Skills taught include;
stroke refinement, elementary backstroke,
scissors kick and beginning diving skills. |

Level 4: Stroke Development (Fish) |
|
Participant
must have mastered Minnow B skills
including: swimming 15 yards of front crawl
and elementary backstroke and 10 yards of
the Dolphin and Scissor kicks before
entering this level. Skills taught include:
Butterfly, Breaststroke, Back crawl, Side
Stroke and open turns.

Level 5: Stroke Refinement (Flying Fish)
|
|
Participant must have mastered Fish skills
including: swimming 25 yards of front crawl
and elementary backstroke, and 15 yards of
back crawl, butterfly, breaststroke, and
sidestroke before entering this level.
Skills taught include; building endurance,
front and back crawl flip turns and long
shallow water dives. |

Level 6: Skill
Proficiency (Tiger Shark) |
|
Participant must have mastered Flying Fish
skills including: swimming 50 yards of front
crawl, and elementary backstroke as well as
25 yards of back crawl, breaststroke,
butterfly, and sidestroke before entering
this level. In this level swimming skills
are refined and emphasis is placed on
building endurance and speed. |

Adult Beginner
(ages 15 years and up) |
|
The objective of this level is to help
adults feel comfortable in the water. Skills
taught include floating independently on
front and back, coordinating the front and
back crawl strokes while emphasizing
alternate breathing. Adults
looking to refine specific stroke techniques
may be better suited for the Adult Fitness
Class. Young adults with no swimming
experience may be eligible for this class as
determined by a swim evaluation.
