The Palette

Exploring Creative Santa Monica

October 25, 2007

The hot winds that blew threw our lives this week left behind dust, ash and the very human need to reach out to one another.  Ancient people gathered in the dark to sing, dance, chant, paint pictures on the scorched earth and prepare to face the challenges of tomorrow.  We're not so very different.  We come together in darkened rooms, we watch dancers and listen to musicians as they wrest control of the world from the invisible forces of nature. So this weekend, when the lights in the theatre fade to black and you feel the beat of the music, the pounding feet upon the floor, the camaraderie of your fellow audience members, take a moment to savor the knowledge that we are never more alive, more unified or more strong than when we leave behind our solitude and join with others to reaffirm our lives through the arts.  And celebrate.

The Historical and Social Palm Tree in Los Angeles
A Talk by Environmental Historian Wade Graham
7:00 pm
Thursday, October 18
Santa Monica Museum of Art
310/586.6488

As a newcomer to LA, I would wander down Sunset Boulevard talking to the trees since most of the people in my hotel’s Hollywood neighborhood were kinda scary.  I felt very much in tune with the trees since most of them came from locales as far away as my own swamps of home.  Palm trees were especially good companions being tall enough to see over everyone else’s head and give me a good overview of the whole situation.  In conjunction with William Pope L’s current exhibition, Wade Graham is going to talk about the role these ubiquitous giants play in our culture.  Get there a bit early and walk through the exhibit before the talk, you’ll find the current exhibitions by Sharon Levy, Loren Holland and William Pope L absolutely entrancing.

Imagine your surprise upon discovering that instead of a weekend cruise to Mazatlan, you have booked passage on a third-rate cruise ship bound to hell. You were expecting Kathie Lee Gifford but discover that your on-board entertainment is provided by The Purgatory Posse, electro-pop-queen MACKA, the Nellie Olesons and Dawn and Taffy Davenport.  And while Doc, Gopher and Isaac are nowhere to be found, the King of the Lotus Eaters, the Fallen Angel of the Morning, and the Hairy Yeti are all on board – and looking at you like you might be part of the buffet. With prizes and other giveaways, this brilliantly repugnant evening is destined to be the greatest event of the Halloween season. Adults only, please.

This dynamic performance by Santa Monica’s mistress of modern dance will explore the process of creation peeling away the layers to reveal how a dance is made.  You’ll see how choreographers and dancers work together from concept through performance.  Along with a preview of work-in-progress Lying on Iguanas, the company will perform both new works and mainstays of their exciting repertoire.  This performance is made possible by a grant from the City of Santa Monica's CO-ARTS Grant Program a project of the Santa Monica Arts Commission.
