You've heard me say this so often that you probably think I sound like a broken record - does anyone remember broken records?  But seriously, there is some amazing stuff going on in town this weekend!  There's the Golden Unitard - not to be confused with the Golden Fleece - the decadance of 1920's Paris, sworplay and romance, California Impressionism, art for teenagers, classical guitar and more!  It's all here in Santa Monica and we're mixing it up just for you right here in this super-packed edition of the Palette.

It’s Dance Fever meets Survivor when our favorite contemporary dance/movement artists are put through a series of challenges in this fiercely friendly competition.   What, you don't have a favorite contemporary dance/movement artist?  Well, come to Highways on Friday night and pick one!  Celebrity judges will rate performances by artists Pat Payne, Jeremy Hahn, Jose Reynoso, Holly Johnston and others in “Is That a Prop in Your Pocket or Are You Glad To See Me?” and other challenges that will showcase the diversity of style and practice in contemporary performance and dance.

In a program sponosored by the Getty Museum, advanced photography students - 10 each from SMC, College of the Canyons, L.A. Valley College and East L.A. College – worked with renowned photographers to capture the essence of their neighborhoods. The results are exceptional and have already served as a springboard for many of these young artists to launch their own careers in galleries across the State of California.

While finding art activities for the kindergarten set is usually not too hard,  finding something to do with your teenager is a nightmare!  But never fear, Santa Monica Museum of Art is here with a rescue.  In this extraordinary class, designed for ages 13 and up, your adolescent offspring will enjoy the hands-on experience of transforming electronic toys into one-of-a-kind, non-traditional musical instruments. The workshop, led by Bianca Pettis (BEATRIX) and Jacob Aaron Roske (JAR), concludes with a concert by BEATRIX*JAR, featuring their collection of circuit bending devices. All materials provided but participants are welcome to bring their own electronic toys for circuit bending.

Local artist and former member of the Santa Monica Arts Commission, Ronn Davis contemplates noise in his exhibition opening this weekend.  Whether audio, visual or psychic, frantic or soothing, it’s an experience that touches us all.  Davis captures it beautifully in this new collection of paintings.

Help inaugurate the Habeas Lounge by reading aloud from the Bill of Rights and other at risk portions of the United States Constitution.   This installation kicks off the 18th Street Arts Center’s Future of Nations six-month exhibition designed to reflect on issues related to the 2008 Presidential election.  Concluding the read aloud will be a short improvised reflection in movement and spoken word on the material by dancer/choreographer/writer Simone Forti.

Since 1937, the Roberts Art Gallery has offered students and the public a chance to view the work of professional artists in an easily accessible destination.  Over the years, the gallery has assembled an impressive collection including these landscapes by some of the great early California artists.  These works were commissioned by the WPA's (Works Progress Administration) Federal Art Project  which was responsible for the creation of thousands of public artworks across the nation. The work of Rex Brandt, Jade Fon, George Melcher, Franz Geritz, Fred Anfinson and others will be on display until October 19, 2007.  The gallery, located on the campus of Santa Monica High School, is open by appointment, at lunch during school days, and Tuesday afternoon from 3:30 pm to 7:00 pm.
