Exploring Creative Santa Monica

November 1, 2007

This weekend in Santa Monica we have some artists doing their level best to explode boundaries while other artists strive to create beauty within age-old traditions.  At McCabes you'll find the wonders of throat singing, an art form derived from the Republic of Tuva in Central Asia, while at the Miles Playhouse you'll see dazzling new concepts in modern dance.  One pair of visual artists will challenge the very definition of art and space at the DCA Fine Art while at Highways another set will use the rituals of the past to celebrate our lives today.  It's a weekend of diversity, a showcase of the broad spectrum of art and culture available here in our City.

This collection of paintings by Brian Biedul and Alejandro Gehry invites viewers to step inside of this Raw Space to experience art that pushes our own understanding of how the human form can be used in art.  Biedul investigates gestalt space with a special interest in the boundary between the concepts of “inside” and “outside.”  Gehry explores the cultural boundaries of human sexuality while challenging society’s norms.  This is bound to be one of the most talked about exhibitions of the fall gallery season!

Toys.  We all want them - big ones, little one, expensive ones.  How often in course of a one-half hour television show do you hear the words “I want that!”?  Could television even exist without our constant desire for new and better toys? And how long does it take for yearning to turn to boredom and that fabulous new toy finds itself in the trash?  These are a few of the thoughts explored by artists such as Michael Beck, Kim Dingle, Bruce Richards and Peter Zokosky in this group show.

And while you're visiting Bergamot, be sure to check out the new John Humble exhibition at The Rose Gallery, George Yepes' work at Patricia Correia Gallery and Marlena Chumo at Schomburge Gallery.

McCabe’s manages to maintain a balance of musical traditions and innovations offering up performances by consistently excellent performers.  This Sunday they’re got a real treat in store when Huun-Huur-Tu steps onto their stage with the astonishing musical phenomenon of throat singing.  The music produced by this quartet as they simultaneously generate multiple tones is indescribably beautiful so I won’t waste words here.  Just go see them!  It’s an experience you’ll never forget
