Exploring Creative Santa Monica

I hope you got all the opera out of your system last weekend because this weekend we'll be flying a little closer to the ground.  It seems this is the weekend for Broadway in Santa Monica with the College and the Morgan-Wixson and the new Stage at Santa Monica all paying tribute to the Great White Way.  There's also an exhibition of Low Brow Art, documentation of the punk movement, and a field of poppies quite unlike the one from The Wizard of Oz - I promise this one won't put you to sleep!

More than 15,000 California poppies will be hanging from the ceiling of SMC's Pete and Susan Barrett Art Gallery this weekend.  This topsy turvy poppy field of truly wild flowers, most of them made from dyed coffee filters, is the brainchild of artists Karon Kagan, Lana Shuttleworth and Leslie Yagar who invite us all to play in their whimsical orange flowered sky!

Come and meet those dancing feet! The kids at the Morgan Wixson Theatre’s 12th Annual Youth Musical have hopped astride a musical warhorse – 42nd Street! Inspired by Busby Berkeley's 1933 movie, the musical includes one great number after another - "You're Getting to Be a Habit with Me," "Shuffle off to Buffalo," "We're in the Money," "Lullaby of Broadway," and of course, the show-stopping "42nd Street."

Landing in the midst of L.A.’s newly-born punk scene in 1978, Anna Summa immediately recognized that she had stumbled onto something extraordinary and began documenting the people around her. She captured some of the best known bands to emerge from L.A. while they were still in their infancy—X and Black Flag.  And along the way she grabbed  images of the Bags, the Alleycats, the Cramps and two of punk’s unofficial godfathers - Iggy Pop and William Burroughs.

Three generations after Robert Williams coined the term “LowBrow,” the women of this iconic alternative art scene are stealing the spotlight from their male counterparts.  Lola began her career as a tattoo artist but found it constricting and has not entered the gallery scene at Copra Nason.  Her work is influenced by sarcasm, silliness, lots of music, little old men in fancy knee socks, walking backwards for a new perspective and June bugs.

The little taste of Broadway in Santa Monica this weekend is only whetting my appetite for more.  If, like me, you’d like a bit more razzmatazz in your life, swing by the college this weekend to see the work of a terrifically talented group of students from the Musical Theatre Workshop.  They’ll be performing an assortment of Broadway showstoppers this weekend that’ll make you long for Herald Square!
