Exploring Creative Santa Monica |
 |
|
I hope everyone had a terrific
Thanksgiving! I am very thankful to be a part of the
terrific City of Santa Monica and able to share some of
what makes this City so special with all of you. This
week we have two daring new plays for you to see, some
spectacular blue grass and folk music for the down home
crowd, and magnificent choral music for the longhair
crowd. Sorry, no rock and roll, blues, electronica,
punk, Broadway, alternative or pop recommendations this
week, but never fear, there's definitely some of each -
and lots, lots more - coming up! |

The lives of a
young SoCal family take a stunning turn when one
member prepares for service in the armed
forces. Can the courage that held them together
following 9/11 prepare them for this new
challenge? Directed by award winner
Paul Linke, this J-Powers
script tells the story through e-mailed
correspondence between the individual family
members. |

The Stage at Santa
Monica continues its sneak peak series
this weekend with an amazing and rare
convergence of some of the best Blue Grass
players in the country. The group includes
Gabe Witcher (Jerry Douglas
Band), Sean and Sara Watkins
(Nickel Creek) and special guests. Recently
referred to by LA Weekly as, "an
elegant, high-class hootenanny" - that sounds
like a Sunday afternoon at my Aunt Lucy's, if
you take away the elegance and the class. The
Watkins Family is best known
for their performances at Largo.
Tickets are free but you must make a
reservation! |

For those who appreciate the time-honored craft
of songwriting, Tom Paxton is
an American folk treasure. Really, the man is an
icon! As Holly Near
said, "Every folk singer I know has either sung
a Tom Paxton song, is singing a Tom Paxton song
or will soon sing a Tom Paxton song ... Tom
Paxton is one hell of a songwriter." The early
show is probably sold out but try to grab
tickets for the late show – you’ll be glad you
did! |

The joyous voices of Cantori Domino
will bring Charpentier’s
Messe de Minuit pour Noel to life this
weekend. This ensemble has been offering Santa
Monicans the best in choral music for many
years. I'll bet they could perform an amazing
rendition of
I'm Spending Hanukkah in Santa Monica.
But even without that local favorite it will be
a wonderful concert! |

Keep an
eye out for this year's Artful Shopping
recommendations! We're all searching for the
best holiday presents for friends and family and I know
of some Santa Monica arts venues that can help you give
a gift that is truly memorable!
Happy
Weekend-
