Making arts and culture come alive in Santa Monica!

February 15, 2007

You might not have gotten diamonds and rubies for Valentines Day, but you have a real gem of a weekend here in Santa Monica with plenty of opportunities to take your sweetie on a belated Valentine art date or to contemplate the joys of single life while immersed in artworks.  Admittedly, cruising the galleries is not as instantly gratifying  as wolfing down bon-bons but the after-effects are so much healthier.  So, whether you're out with the love of your life or flying solo, go love yourself some art.

Vidiots partners with PXL This  to screen their 16th annual festival.  This folk art of the late 20th century is created using the Fisher-Price PXL 2000, a toy video camera released in the 1980's. Each of these retro-chic films can be seen as intimate epics demonstrating the creativity possible when technical sophistication is completely unavailable.

Alice goes back through the looking glass to visit the wonderful Wonderland characters of her youth at the Santa Monica Playhouse. Youthful audiences will love helping Alice set things aright in this zany musical comedy.  I've got a six-year-old and a four-year-old visiting this weekend so, meet us Saturday morning and we'll have a real good time!

The draft Creative Capital plan will be presented to the Santa Monica City Council on Tuesday February 27th.  The Arts Commission will be hosting a small reception that evening in the lobby of City Hall from 5:00 to 6:00.  There will be copies of the draft plan, refreshments and possibly some exciting entertainment.   We'd love to have you to join us in marking this important milestone for Santa Monica's cultural community.  If you'd like to come down and show your support for the arts, please RSVP  and let us know if you will be coming.  And if you'd like a copy of the Creative Capital Executive Summary, drop me a note and I'll send one off to you right away!

Happy Weekend -
