Music, visual art and drama head up the bill this weekend with Santa Monica Playhouse extending their hit musical Audition, new and ongoing gallery exhibitions showcasing terrific new works, and music for all generations performed by all generations.  There's fun and inspiration to be found around every corner in our hometown.  So take a peak around your corner and see what you can find - chances are it'll be great!

Bergamot continues to be the place to spot hot new trends in contemporary art and this week-end is no exception.  David Palmer's new show is up at the William Turner Gallery while a groups show, Winter Selections, consisting of work by Damien Hirst, Barbara Kruger, Gerhard Richter and others wraps up its run at IKON LTD/Kay Richards Gallery

On Sunday morning take the kids to McCabe's to see The Sunshine Sisters.  This delightful trio performs bright, uplifting, and even educational musical treats.  Youthful audiences can sing along to catchy original compositions as well as old favorites.

There are many things in life that improve with age - friends, wine, cast-iron skillets, teenagers, just to name a few.  The Santa Monica College Emeritus College Band consists of 60 musicians who consitute another prime example.  Age and experience brings a richness to their music that is rarely seen in even the best companies.  On Sunday, the Band will perform an eclectic program that will feature such composers as Ravel, Rossini, Wagner and selections from one of my favorite composers greatest works - Richard Rogers' South Pacific.

Mark you calendars now for the first Santa Monica Airport Art Walk.  For the first time ever the artists working at Santa Monica's historic airport will open their studio doors and let us all see what's happening.  It's going to be a great afternoon with a terrific assortment of artists from Santa Monica Art Studios, Barker Hangar, and Santa Monica College Ceramics Department along with special highlights from the Ruskin Theatre Group's Café Plays.  We'll have lots more details in weeks to come.

 

Don't forget that Creative Capital will be presented to the Santa Monica City Council this Tuesday, February 27th.  Join us for a small reception in the lobby of City Hall from 5:00 to 7:00 and take a look at the plan's observations and recommendations, share some refreshments and enjoy performances by some of Santa Monica High Schools most talented young artists. 

Santa Monica's cultural community is central to the city's identity, contributing to the economy, the environment and the overall quality of life of this unique beach city.  Join the Arts Commission in support of this important new document that will help make Santa Monica an even better environment for creativity in all forms
