Bringing Arts and Culture to Life in Santa Monica                                   April 19, 2007

It's Earth Day this weekend, a day to celebrate the abundant natural and cultural resources in our community.  You can dance to the rhythmic beats on the Santa Monica Pier's celebration, bond with neighbors at the Virginia Avenue Park Unity Resource Fair, welcome Dolly Levi back where she belongs at SAMO High School or salute the culture of 1980's punk at Track 16 Gallery.  But no matter how you choose to spend this Earth Day weekend, it's a great one for art and culture in Santa Monica!

Hello Dolly
is a quintessential American musical.  It’s been performed in a multitude of languages on stages all over the world.  This week-end and next, you ‘ll find it in the highly capable hands of  Santa Monica High School’s theatre students who bring the dazzling characters originally created by Thornton Wilder to life once more.  Whether you pick a Friday or a Saturday, you should definitely Put On Your Sunday Clothes and see this delightful production.

Accomplished writer/performers each with a unique style and distinctive voice celebrate the spoken word at Highways this weekend.  Make the scene and see the electrifying work of poets, DJs, singers, musicians, artists, dancers, and more!  This project is supported by the City of Santa Monica Community Arts Grant Program, a project of the Santa Monica Arts Commission

Track 16 Gallery hits us with a double whammy this weekend hosting opening receptions for two of the most imaginative and daring exhibitions you could ever find.  In a partnership with The Godfrey Daniels School of Charm the gallery presents an act of rebellion - The Powder Room, referring both to a lady’s toilette and the place where folks used to store gunpowder.  There's not theme or thesis to the selected works, curators Georganne Deen and Christine Wertheim have simply assembled an exhibition focusing on unruly women (and a few men) of the art world.

And as if that wasn't enough, rip-roaring punk artist Johanna Went, who was notorious back in the day that the word really meant NOTORIOUS, presents a retrospective of her work at the gallery as well..  Went, along with a host of renown performance artists, will be performing at on MAY 5, 12 and 19, so a future edition of the Palette will give you the scoop on that.  But in the meantime, hit the opening reception on Saturday night for both exhibitions – it’ll be a blast!
