Bringing Arts and Culture to Life in Santa Monica

June 14, 2007

On this brilliant spring weekend, we should all take a moment and reflect on how important freedom is to each of us - we often forget that these liberties were hard-won.  Most folks think that once the Civil War ended, so did slavery.    Officially, the odious practice ended with the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863, but in truth it took a while for that news to spread. In a world prior to cable television or any other form of mass communication, it wasn't until June 19, 1865 that word finally reached Galveston, Texas with the arrival of federal troops.

Since then, the date has been adopted as a holiday, Juneteenth.  This weekend two of our community cultural agencies will commemorate this special day in distinct ways.  You should definitely plan to visit one of them for experiences that will prove educational, enlightening and highly entertaining.

Writer-producer J.M. Morris gives Juneteenth her own signature take - sometimes rivetingly serious then bitingly satirical.  It’s a performance that examines this holiday and other "ludicrous lies and omissions" from historical, political/socio-economic and personal points of view from America's touted, but sometimes dysfunctional melting pot.

Documenting the Pico Neighborhood

7:30pm
Thursday, June 21
Santa Monica College Main Stage
1900 Pico Blvd

310/828-8239

What began as an examination into the history of the Pico Neighborhood, has emerged as a full length documentary film and is continuing to grow as an online, searchable, video/audio database of interviews with local community members and the creation of a classroom study guide to accompany the film for high school and college students. What was there before the Santa Monica Freeway?  What is there now?  This film delves into fairly recent history to present us with fascinating answers to these questions.  The film will be followed by a Q&A discussion with actors Barry Shabaka Henley (Collateral, The Terminal), Paulina Sahagun, and producer/director Michael Barnard.

Shakespeare on the Run

Complete Works Of William Shakespeare (Abridged)
8:00 pm Fridays and Saturdays
2:00 pm Sundays
June 15-July 22
Ruskin Group Theatre
3000 Airport Drive at Santa Monica Airport
310/397.4910

While this is certainly not the play you want to see before starting your term paper on the class and social structures evident in A Midsummer Night’s Dream, it’s a truly hilarious, irreverent and fast-paced romp through the Bard’s plays perfectly suitable for Shakespearean scholars, neophytes and even those people who’ve never heard of the guy.  Presenting all 37 of Shakespeare’s plays in 97 minutes might be an unreachable dream for some, but under Mikey Meyers’ direction, the Ruskin meets the challenge with tremendous aplomb.  In fact, you’ll be laughing so hard you’ll aplomb right into the aisle!

Happy Weekend Everyone!
