| Bringing Arts and Culture to Life in Santa Monica |
August 1, 2007 |

|
Whether you're looking to boogie on the Pier, graze in the grass, check out new theatre and daring visual art or just curl up on a couch with a book, once again Santa Monica is the place to do it. There's zydeco tonight on the Pier, Brazilian jazz on City Hall lawn on Sunday, Russian drama at the Miles, Japanese/English mythic delights at Santa Monica Playhouse and visual art provocateurs on Pico. And last, but certainly not least, the Santa Monica Library is looking to you for a suggestion for this year's Citywide Reads.

Brasil Brazil Jazz on the Lawn 5:00 pm Sunday August 5 Santa Monica City Hall 1685 Main Street |
|
|
I’ve been teasing you all summer with promises of incredible jazz on a lush green lawn. “What lawn?” you’ve asked. “Your lawn,” I reply. The lawn in front of your own City Hall will come alive on Sunday when Brasil Brazil takes the stage and fills the air with sumptuous vocals, pounding drums and spectacular costumes. It’s the perfect spot for an early evening picnic spending quality time with your friends and family on the grass. And be sure to stop by the Cultural Affairs Division table and say hello! |

I grew up in the same town as Queen Ida, listening to the same zydeco sounds that she performs so brilliantly, wandering down the same oak lined boulevards and eating crawfish from the same bayou. Unlike the Queen, I’ve never won a Grammy, conquered Europe, dazzled Japan and Australia, sold out houses coast-to-coast, and I’m hopeless on an accordion. So, when you head out to the Pier tonight, don’t come to see me, come see the Queen of Mardi Gras in all her glory on her triumphant return to the Santa Monica Pier. |

Myths of the Pacific Rim
Make Mine Myths The norm in Southern California bilingual theatre is English/Spanish but Santa Monica Playhouse has always surpassed the norm! This weekend they present their Japanese sister theatre in a Japanese/English musical delving in a world of myths both western and eastern exploring contemporary issues affecting both sides of the Pacific Rim. These Friday afternoon matinee performances are the perfect place for children and young adults to have a wonderful theatre experience while learning more about one of the world’s most fascinating cultures. |

Russian Drama
Godislav This premiere performance tells the story of a documentary film maker who delves perhaps too deeply into the mysterious life of his subject, a volatile surgeon who survived the hellish civil war between Chechnya and Russia. |

Santa Monica Citywide Reads Seeks Book Suggestions
for 2008
Do you have a favorite book? Is there a book you’d want to share, not only with your best friends but with everyone in your community? If so, the Santa Monica Library wants to hear about it. The Santa Monica Citywide Reads Advisory Committee wants your input for the 2008 book selection. Citywide Reads is aimed at encouraging a culture of reading and promoting dialogue about books in Santa Monica. They’re looking for a work of fiction that is amenable to group discussion, with a broad appeal. A book that is challenging but not exclusive, and available in paperback, on tape and in other media. Sounds like a challenge to me, I’m assuming that Valley of the Dolls would not make the cut. To make a suggestion for Citywide Reads 2008, please complete an online suggestion form at www.smpl.org/cwr, visit any Santa Monica Public Library, call (310) 458-8600, or email citywidereads@smgov.net. Suggestions will be accepted until September 1, 2007. The 2008 Citywide Reads title will be chosen and announced in the fall and the program will take place in the spring. |
