Exploring Creative Santa Monica |
September 20, 2007 |

So, what do you have going on this weekend? Me, I'm gonna hit the
Library tonight and listen to some really cool stories then I'll dash on
over to the Pier and watch Audrey Hepburn and Gregory Peck. On Friday
night, I'm gonna check out fiddle virtuoso and step dancing champion
April Verch at McCabe's and then on Saturday I'll be sipping white wine
at 4 pm and checking out the treats at Track 16. Then Sunday I go back
to McCabe's - this time with the kids - for JAMBO. Afterwards, I'll
drop them at home, whip on over to Bergamot to see Joel Grey's
photographic works and then it's off to the Hollywood Bowl for the Rufus
Wainwright concert. Rufus isn't in Santa Monica this weekend so I'm not
going to tell you about that. But here's all the details on the rest of
my schedule. |

Thursday, September 20th
Martin Luther King Jr. Auditorium
Santa Monica Public Library

One of the West Side's most enduring and
imaginative storytelling evenings brings its collection of
raconteurs to the Santa Monica Library tonight for
one-night-only. Every first Monday of the month, storytellers
gather at the
Powerhouse Theatre to regale audiences with accounts from
their lives. These narratives are often hilarious frequently
tender and always powerful. Some of the best tales from their
six year history will be featured tonight. This special evening
is presented with the support of a Santa Monica CO-ARTS Grant. |

Through October 24th
Track 16 Gallery
Bergamot Station Art Center
2525 Michigan Avenue
Building C1

Since
1992, the publishing arm of Track 16 Gallery, Smart
Art Press, has published over 150 exhibition catalogues,
artists’ books, ephemera, multiples, videos, films, and novels
ranging in items from a limited edition
Frozen Walt Doll by Burt Payne 3 and (Sponge Bob Squarepants
creator) Steve Hillenburg, to a limited edition tea towel
commemorating the 2007 exhibition by Argentinean collective,
Mondongo. This is going to be a wild and wacky exhibition of
incredibly amazing objects including a projection of “Fresh
Acconci” by artists Paul McCarthy and Mike Kelley that re-stages
classic 1970s performance pieces by Vito Acconci, with a
decidedly ironic Southern California sensibility.
In
lieu of an opening reception, the gallery will be serving white
wine daily at 4 PM to celebrate the launch of Smart Art Press’s
newest branch, White Wine Press. |

Verch

Saturday, September 22
McCabe's
3101 Pico Blvd
310/828-4497
Award-winning fiddler, step dancing expert
and sultry vocalist Verch brings new meaning to
the word multi-tasking. Though only 27, she is a consummate
musician (check out
Take Me Back on Rounder) and her live performances are
an astounding display of energy-infused virtuosity. She will
blow your mind. |

JAMBO

Sunday, September 23
McCabe's
3101 Pico Blvd
310/828-4497
Band leader Steve
Pierson just wanted to write a few cool songs for his
daughter but ended up with one of LA’s most outstanding family
musical acts. They’ve been building quite a following around
town and on Sunday you can see the McCabe's debut of this
extraordinary ensemble. Pierson says, “<Our> songs speak to
children’s imaginations. They are about growing up, sharing, and
inclusion ….. and, of course, some are just about dancing and
having fun.” Check out a video of them singing
Wish I Was – it really looks
fun! |

Looking Hard
Joel Grey
Frank Pictures
Gallery
Artist Reception
6:30 - 9:30pm
Sunday September 23
Exhibition runs through October 12
Bergamot Station, A-5
2525 Michigan Ave
310/828-0211
Joel Grey is not content with the artistic acclaim he
gathered for his performance in
Cabaret, or
his more recent stint in
Wicked as the (perhaps not so) Wonderful Wizard of Oz,
his amazing soft shoe rendition of Mr. Cellophane from
Chicago or the hundreds of notable appearances on TV –
my favorite was his deliciously devilish character on Buffy.
He added photographer to his resume and now you find him not
only in the halls of Tony and Academy award winners but also
among the collections of the famed Whitney Museum in New York.
Frank Pictures presents his compelling
collection of photograps of what he refers to as “ the beauty of
bruised and broken things.” |
