Bringing Arts and Culture to Life in Santa Monica

September 6, 2007

The fall gallery season starts this weekend and Santa Monica is the place to be - the diversity of artists, styles, media, and disciplines that you’ll find in the galleries this weekend is almost overwhelming.  Most of the exhibitions have artist receptions so all you party types should join the throngs of art lovers on the gallery crawl on Saturday night.  You’ll have a great time checking out the art and the people and seeing which gallery is serving the best hors d’oeuvres - just try not to overdo it on the Two-Buck-Chuck.  If you prefer your art experiences to be more intimate, make the rounds on Saturday afternoon and you’ll probably also get a few glimpses of the behind the scenes activities that take place before any openings.

But don’t despair music lovers!  Saturday night the Cantantes Homines Men’s Chamber Ensemble makes their Santa Monica premiere performance with a very impressive lineup and SGI presents the second of their free Concerts for Peace.  Theatre and dance folks, I'll have something new and exciting for you next week.

New Exhibition at Santa Monica Museum of Art
William Pope.L
Art After White People: Time, Trees, & Celluloid...
Opening reception: Friday, 7-9 pm
Exhibition through December 23
Santa Monica Museum of Art
Bergamot Station, G
2525 Michigan Avenue

The first major West-Coast museum exhibition by the artist William Pope.L comes to Santa Monica this weekend.  The artist has created a collection of fascinating works created especially for this large-scale installation at Santa Monica Museum of Art.  Visitors will enter through The Grove, an interior garden of towering painted white palm trees.  From there the walk through the museum becomes even more extraordinary.  For twenty-five years, William Pope.L has worked on the edge of the art world constantly challenging and confronting social inequity with dark humor and biting critique.
