The Palette

Exploring Creative Santa Monica

January 9, 2009

We here at the Palette hope that everyone’s holidays were as terrific as they could possibly be!  I think though that the SAMOHI Marching Band probably had the best New Year celebration this year - they marched in the London New Year’s Day Parade!  Can you imagine what fun that must have been?  Check them out online on You Tube – they come in at the 4 minutes, 4 seconds mark –  at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_ck-NbYbKJI

This weekend is so full of art and culture that I can't possibly fit it all in this one newsletter.  It seems almost every gallery in town has an opening either on Saturday or Sunday, then there’s a concert by Jacaranda, three concerts at McCabe’s, and to top it all off, Photo LA returns to Santa Monica (at Barker Hangar) presenting us all with a chance to see some of the best photography available in the entire country.  So, here’s to the start of a great new year filled with art, culture, tons of happiness and wishes fulfilled.

Alex Prager, Kimberly, 2008, can be seen at Photo LA.  Click the image for information regarding tickets, times and exhibits.

The winter gallery season really gets underway with openings aplenty at Bergamot Station.  Listed below are some of this weekend's opening receptions.  Don't forget - visiting the galleries, attending the openings, checking out the crowds and looking at the art is totally free.  Just bring your checkbook if you're planning on making a purchase..

Start With Lunch at the Cafe

A Day At The Antique Mall
Robbie Kaye
Bergamot Café

To get through all the new art up at Bergamot this weekend you should probably start early so I'm suggesting you start with lunch at the Café before hitting the galleries. And while you enjoy your lunch, you'll see a collection of new work by Santa Monica based photographer Robbie Kaye. The collection centers around an assortment of vintage dolls, mannequins, ceramics, glass and other objects found at your local antique mall, as seen in a way you might never have considered them through Kaye's lens.

Double Opening at Frank Pictures Gallery
Suger Shack, Malone Mills, 2008
Portraits, David Florimbi
Orbgasm,  Malone Mills

Frank Pictures Gallery

Frank Pictures Gallery obviously didn’t get all the partying out of their system on New Years since they have scheduled openings on both Saturday and Sunday.  On Saturday it’s David Florimbi’s Portraits then on Sunday Orbgasm by Malone Mills goes on view.  Check their website to see the exhibitions on line and get all the details.

    Memories of the Lake

Amy Bennett
At the Lake

Richard Heller Gallery

May Bennet's work will remind you of summer days on the lake, if you were lucky enough to have summer days by a lake. If not, think of them as a the depiction of a dream summer spent splashing in the water, diving off a pier or casting a line between the rocks in hopes of a dinner of fried trout and hushpuppies with the whole family.

Jacaranda Rings in a New Year

Birds, Bells & Spells
Jacaranda, Music on the Edge of Santa Monica
Saturday January 10, 8:00 PM
First Presbyterian Church Santa Monica

Grammy-nominated pianist Gloria Cheng solos on a program of colorful, gripping musical adventures. Jacaranda continues the OM Century, a two-year celebration of the centenary of Olivier Messiaen with three of his most compelling students, Boulez, Murail and Benjamin, as well as Takemitsu, an ardent admirer. Included is Messiaen's rarely performed early dramatic scene for soprano, tenor, violin and piano in the style of the French impressionists.

Four Person Exhibit at SMC Art Gallery

Jenny Hager, Tom Lundquist, CJ Mammarella and John Zarcone
Pete & Susan Barrett Art Gallery -
Santa Monica College Performing Arts Center

On Friday the Pete and Susan Barrett Art Gallery will host a reception for a new exhibition of work by four of SMC's most distinguished art professors. Representing a variety of styles and sensibilities, these artists represent just a small cross section of the diverse talent that can be found on the college's campus.

Getting Down With 3 Concerts at McCabe's
Rachel Verch

April Verch
Friday, January 9

Jacks**t
Saturday, January 10

Peter Alsop
Matinee Kids' Show
Sunday, January 11th
McCabe's

If visual art just doesn't appeal and classical music is simply not your style, then get on over to McCabes and get down with April Verch on Friday or Jacks**t on Saturday. Then Sunday morning, bring the kids to see Peter Alsop. Verch is an award-winning fiddler, step dancing expert and sultry vocalist who just released her seventh album combing bluegrass, jazz, Celtic and other influences along with her own instincts and enthusiasm to create a sound far greater than the sum of its parts.

Jacks**t (This being a family oriented newsletter, I probably should not spell out the **) is the bestest thang that ever came out of Chochtotan' California - a country-fried trio that rocks the house!  And Peter Alsop brings humor and insight to kids and adults alike with his songs "You Get A Little Extra When You Watch TV" and "My Gums Grow Teeth." He's consistently won Best Children's Music awards from Parents Choice and your kids will grow up depraved and deprived if you don't bring them to see this terrific talent. Not that I want to make you feel guilty or anything.

And that wraps it up for this weekend.  Do you really want more?  I know, I'll list them all and We'll read all night.  I don't ever want to quit typing.  Well, I've only got one more:  Lisa Wolpe of LA Women’s Shakespeare begins a new Shakespeare Class right here in Santa Monica on January 10 for four Saturdays in January.  Actors, or just Shakespearean devotees, will learn how to interpret the bard ways that will make the poetry of Richard III sound as natural and effortless as coffee chatter at your local Starbucks.
