Exploring Creative Santa Monica
June 11, 2009

What is a man? That's the question at Highways this weekend. The answer might surprise you. Elsewhere, a caterpiller teaches counting and colors, shoppers seek rare finds amidst a cornucopia of brilliant California tile, Peter and Alice get chummy, music lovers get down and SAMOHI students speak Latin - on film no less. What a weekend!

Becoming a Man in 127 EASY Steps
Scott Turner Schofield
Highways Performance Space
Friday and Saturday at 8:30 p.m.

This fascinating solo theater work employs comedy, multimedia storytelling, aerial acrobatics, and audience participation to reveal just a few of the 127 stories that comprise the life of a young man who just happens to have been born a girl. Scott Turner Schofield is a man who was a woman and who on first sight most people (including yours truly) assume is a gay teenager. A former debutante and homecoming queen from the Deep South, his life and work is filled with hilarious situations with the possibility of terrifying consequences. I’ve seen Scott perform, he's totally fascinating and his performances at colleges and universities across America have resulted in incredible changes in the way that transgender students are treated. Scott sets an amazing example of using the arts to change the world around you.

The Ninth Annual Antique
& Contemporary Tile Sale

California Heritage Museum

Saturday at 10:00 am

Picking up a few (or a bunch) of the beautiful hand painted antique and contemporary tile available at this yearly sale is a great way to bring art into your home. You’ll also find craftsman and Monterey style tile tables, wall pieces, pottery and other unique items by such historic companies at Batchelder, Malibu, Catalina, Calco and Alhambra tile companies. I've seen entire tiled fountains and other decorative elements salvaged from 1920’s homes at past sales and they're really stupendous! And even if you don’t buy a thing, it’s a fascinating look at Southern California craftsmanship from an era in which even the most modest room of your house could be filled with exquisite handcrafted works of art.

Visit the museum’s website for more information here or give them a call at 310/392.8537.

Happy Birthday, Hungry Caterpillar!

A Celebration of Eric Carle
Santa Monica Main Public Library

Saturday at 10:30 am

Bring the munchkins to the Main Library on Santa Monica Boulevard for a celebration of beloved author/illustrator Eric Carle on the the 40th anniversary of the publication of The Very Hungry Caterpillar. The celebration begins with the He Be Buggin puppet show with Richard Woloski followed by The Very Hungry Caterpillar film after which kids can create their own Eric Carle-style art in collage workshops. What a great way to start the weekend! And if you don’t have kids of your own, go borrow a couple. Trust me, most parents would be happy to loan theirs out on a Saturday morning so they could sleep in! And you'll have a blast traveling down memory lane with this hungry little guy.

Et tu, SAMOHI?

Pacifica
Santa Monica High School Latin Program
Aero Theatre
Saturday at 1:00 pm

This just amazes me – the Latin students at SAMOHI have produced a full-length feature film entirely in Latin! How cool is that? But don’t worry, if you went to one of the plebian high schools that didn’t teach Latin (mine barely taught English), there are subtitles. The project started out as a weekly soap opera but it was just too big for television. Produced, written, directed, edited and almost completely student acted, I'll bet this is the best movie ever shot in Latin - at least in Santa Monica. And check out the cast in that picture – the actors on The Hills have nothing on this crew of cuties. And don't you just know that nobody on The Hills speaks Latin?

Contact Samohi Latin teacher Luke Henderson at 310-395-3204 x201 or via e-mail for additional information.

Foot Stomping Folk/Rock/Country

Dan Navarro/Stonehoney
McCabe's
Saturday at 8:00 pm

You might know Dan Navarro as half of the celebrated acoustic duo Lowen & Navarro. He'll be on stage by himself on Saturday night but his performance will still hallmarked by songs of insight and experience, delivered straight up with honesty, passion, and grace. And even if you've never seen his face, you'll have heard his voice on movies, TV shows and commercials, such as Happy Feet, Ice Age 2, Prison Break, Family Guy, and American Dad.

Stonehoney serves up a home-cooked soul stew of good time American music with plenty of sweet vocal harmony to spare. Veteran musicians Shawn Davis, Phil Hurley, David Phenicie and Nick Randolph create something special by blending elements of country, folk, and rock into a unique new sound that is both fresh and yet somehow achingly familiar.

Buy your tickets here.

So once more dear friends, unto the breach! We'll banish those grey skies and June gloom this weekend just like we did last weekend and fill our days with art and sunshine!
