The Palette
Exploring Creative Santa Monica
|
June 18, 2009 |
|
This is one of those weekends in Santa Monica when there
are just too many options to fit into one small
newsletter. This special supplement to the Palette
brings you news of the Santa Monica Teen Film Festival,
Cafe Plays at the Ruskin, and Shakespeare Santa Monica:
brand spanking new films by young filmmakers, even
brander spankinger newer plays by professional writers
and the zenith of classic theatre. So, as if you didn't
already have too much to do this weekend, I'm giving you
three more things to put on your calendar. |

4th Annual Santa Monica
Teen Film Festival
Miles Playhouse
Saturday at 7:00 pm
&
Santa Monica Main Library
Sunday at 2:00 pm
Did you know that Stephen Spielberg was 13 years
old when he won his first film festival award?
How'd you like to be able to say that you were
there? How'd you like to say you voted for it?
Well, Spielberg has made his mark and we missed
that festival but there's a young film maker out
there somewhere right now who is going to be
just as big, just as talented and just as
famous. And maybe this weekend her film just
might be one of those shown at the 4th
Annual Santa Monica Teen Film Festival.
Or maybe he's a boy and his film will get shown.
Either way, you'll never know if you don't go.
The festival has accepted dozens of films from
all over the U.S. for this year's event. The
films, ranging from 30 seconds to 30 minutes in
length, have been created by youth aged 12 to 18
years. I know there are gems in there that
you'll be so glad you saw. Each screening
includes a unique line-up of films and is
followed by live voting for the Audience
Favorite Award. On Sunday they'll hand out
awards for Best of the Fest, Best Documentary,
Best Live Action, Best Animation and a special
Santa Monica Budding Filmmaker Award.
Admission to all events is free. For additional
information, or to reserve seats, please call
310/458.8634 or e-mail the
Santa Monica Teen Film Festival.

Much Ado About
Nothing
Shakespeare Santa Monica
On the Tennis Courts at Reed Park
Saturday, June 20 through Sunday June 27
8:00 pm
There are no star-crossed lovers to be found in
this frothy confection by the Bard. Here you'll
find cunning disguises & stunning surprises in
the words of a more contemporary bard. There are
bumbling watchmen, malapropisms as corny as
Kansas, villainous scheming relatives with nasty
plots and falsely accused innocent maidens. And
all this is going to take place on a tennis
court. Won't that be fun? Each performance is
pay-what-you-can so be sure to make your
reservations as sold out houses (or in this
case, tennis courts) are the norm.
Make your reservations
here and make a donation to the theatre or
send an e-mail with the name, number in your
party and which performance you wish to attend
to
Shakespeare
Santa Monica.

Café Plays
Ruskin Theatre
Sunday at 7:30 and 9:00 pm
If you have yet to attend a night of
Café Plays at the
Ruskin, you are missing something very
special. The creativity and spontaneity of these
performances is nothing less than magnificent!
This month's theme is A Civil Union. I can just
imagine what fun the writers, directors and
actors will have taking this theme and running
to ever more imaginative places with it.
