Exploring Creative Santa Monica
|
June 25, 2009 |
|
It's finally summer! June Gloom is dead and gone.
Theoretically. This weekend, we've got our annual 4th of
July Fireworks at SMC, Michelle Shocked at McCabe's, the
High Priestess of the French New Wave Cinema, an art
opening that teaches kids to surf, and new plays at the
Miles Memorial Playhouse. Who could ask for anything
more?
All of you artistic types with an
environmental bent should be sure to head on over to the
Santa Monica Museum of Art for the
Arts: Earth Partnership reception on Friday
night- and if you don't have an environmental bent, you
should go get one! Seriously, you don't even have to be
an artist. There will be lots of resource
materials for everyone, including audience members!
But if you're a Santa Monica and you're not working in a
sustainable manner and you know you should be working
sustainably, come to this reception and we'll teach you
how!
Don't
forget that
Santa Monica Shakespeare is still happening at Reed
Park and it's time to finalize your plans for the
Third
Annual Main Street 4th of July Parade. You don't
want to be singing "Tell me while I was getting ready,
did a parade pass by?" Bonus points for all you folks
you can identify that lyric!

Breakfast With My Mother
A play about three generations of Chicana women
and the role reversal of their lives as dementia
enters the isolated world of retirement,
gardens, and Spanish-language television.
Mami, Mami, Quien Soy?
While facing a mother's dementia, a
mother/daughter relationship goes from adversary
to love. Through the power of forgiveness, a
woman finds herself the keeper of her mother's
stories. Veteran solo performer Raquel Salinas
crafts a magnificent multi-character tale of
care-giving, the process of letting go what was,
and embracing what is.
Carrie's Web
A young South Asian woman struggles to untangle
herself from cultural and familial webs. She
looks for empowerment to stop cycle of violence
only to find help from an extremely unlikely
source. Can facing her deepest fears change her
future? A fantastical tale is woven with
contemporary Indian dance, theater and a
high-heel-wearing spider. Come join the healing
through laughter, tears and hope.
Healing Mars
Healing Mars delves into the world
of going against Doctor's orders. Taking a
holistic approach to Rheumatoid Arthritis,
Marcella Pabros-Clark challenges the monsters of
prescription drugs and health insurance.
Creating theatrical dance through multimedia,
she reclaims her body, mind, and soul.
This production is sponsored by a grant from the
Santa Monica Arts Commission.

Shocked, I Tell You, Absolutely Shocked! |
|
Michelle Shocked
McCabe's
8:00 pm
Friday
"I'm the most sophisticated hillbilly you'll
ever meet." Is that a great line or what? I
think this woman and I would get along just
great. ‘Cause if you knew me and didn't know
her, then we'd probably say that I'm the most
sophisticated hillbilly you ever met. But that's
neither here nor there, Michelle's been shocking
people since 1984 when she got her name (along
with an arrest for civil disobedience) at the
Democratic National Convention in San Francisco.
She's recorded so many albums and is just so
very talented and we are so lucky to have
McCabe's where people like
Michelle perform right here in Santa Monica.
There's limited seating for this concert so
buy your tickets online
here as soon as you can dig out your credit
card.

Celebrate America
Corsair Field
Santa Monica College
Saturday
6:30 pm
Fireworks at Dusk
Santa Monica's one and only 4th of July
Fireworks Celebration takes place on
Saturday night at SMC. The festivities kick off
at 6:30 with musical entertainment the beautiful
new Quad. From there you can wander on over to
Corsair Field to hear the Derek Bordeaux
Group'srhythm and blues sounds while
you're waiting to light up the sky. By the way,
you're welcome to bring your own picnic dinners
or buy some of the great food available from the
vendors on site, but you can't eat on the field
this year since they just bought a new synthetic
playing surface and unfortunately catsup,
mustard and diet sodas are just not good for it.
I know YOU would never spill, but it's all those
other people we have to look out for.
This event is sponsored by the City of Santa
Monica and the SMC Associated Students.

kids. The gallery works with the Santa
Monica Police Activities League to

the police actually drive them to and from the

up some of the fabulous pottery from local
artists and some collectible pieces from
generous donors including:
Otto Heino,
Patrick Crabb,
Sierra Pecheur
and
Lana Wilson
who created the work on the right. So
stop by on Saturday, pick up a few presents for
yourself or hold onto them until the holidays
