Exploring Creative Santa Monica

Another weekend is upon us and the Palette is here to rescue us all from two days spent vegging out on the couch re-watching the Academy Awards on Tivo.  Make a trip out Friday night to hear some really hot alternative Latin music when Sailway Collective presents Umoverde and Very Be Careful at the Temple Bar.  Since it’s looking like we’ve got great weather on the horizon Saturday will be the perfect day to get a some exercise and learn some history while you take the Santa Monica Conservancy Walking Tour of Downtown Santa Monica.  And if you’ve got little ones, you can take the tour and then make a sojourn down Fourth Street to the Santa Monica Playhouse for their new production of Mary, Mary, Quite Contrary.

Unfortunately, the Ditty Bops are sold out at McCabe’s  but you can always get on the wait list or just hang out in front of the store and hope someone doesn’t show up!  Chances are my date will pull a disappearing act and I’ll have a ticket to share!  You can also take advantage of the terrific music programs I’ve listed below at Santa Monica College

If you’re wondering what your teenager will be doing during spring break, we’ve got a terrific option for them at Santa Monica Museum of Art.  And last, but NEVER least, if you’re an artist, or know one, be sure to let them know about the Request for Proposals currently out for Glow – this summer’s overnight beachside art extravaganza. So, read on and make your plans now for a great weekend!

40th Anniversary Concert
Emeritus College Band

Sunday, March 2
John Adams Middle School Auditorium
16th and Pearl Streets

Have you got a clarinet or a trumpet stored away in the attic gathering dust?   Well, at least one group of Santa Monicans have dragged those instruments out of the attic and put them to use!  They are the members of the Santa Monica College Emeritus College Band.  So, if you’re a frustrated musician who’d like to try out your chops but you’re worried that you might not meet the age requirement, don’t despair!  The band has members ranging in age from 20’s to 91!  The program will feature pieces by Vivaldi, Glenn Miller, and Johann Strauss, but the band’s signature number will always be a Sousa march.

Slavs Have Soul!

Slavic Soul Party
Under the Radar
7:00 pm
Sunday, March 2

Elsewhere at Santa Monica College, New York City's No. 1 brass band for Balkan soul gypsy funk will be playing a free concert as part of the Under the Radar Series.  I can't help but wonder who the number 2 band for Balkan soul gypsy funk might be.  Anyway, the Slavic Soul Party combines fiery gypsy brass, soulful Balkan anthems, hip-grinding American funk, and Mexican and Asian immigrant sounds.  Check them out here on YouTube!  Tickets are free, as is parking, but seating is limited and reservations are required.  This series is brought to you, in part, by the City of Santa Monica.

Call For Proposals

Every evening when the sun goes down we get closer and closer to the night when Santa Monica is going to Glow.  This week we released a request for proposals to artists living or working in Los Angeles County for commissions of $500 to $2,000 for new artworks to be included in this unprecedented one-night-only art spectacular taking place along the Santa Monica Pier, Santa Monica Beach, Palisades Park and surrounding areas.

Artwork considered for Glow may vary in medium, including performance and video installations but all works should be conceived specifically for the event. Artists are particularly encouraged to submit proposals which invite audiences to actively participate and interact with the artwork.  Folks, this is going to be such a blast - every artist in town is going to want to get in on the ground floor!

You know it's coming, right.  Spring Break?  When every teenager far and wide will be spending hours and hours on the Promenade annoying the grown ups!  Well, I am here to give you an alternative! Every year, the Santa Monica Museum of Art presents one of the most amazing spring break programs for Santa Monica middle and high school students.  To be eligible for this program you must be a middle or high school student residing or attending a Santa Monica Malibu Unified School District school in the Pico/Cloverfield neighborhood of Santa Monica. Area schools for Park Studio: John Adams Middle School, Santa Monica High School.

This year, Park Studio will explore contemporary art through the theme of puppetry with three fantastic artists.  They will build original puppets, make a puppet video and finally work on a print project with the puppets to be placed on exhibit in the museum this summer.  The workshops are free complete with lunch and snacks.  The only requirement is that the participants agree to attend at least one full week of the program.  For signup information Click Here!

Well, that wraps it up for this week.  But mark your calendars now!  The Second Annual Santa Monica Airport Artwalk is right around the corner.  On Saturday, March 29, join us for a walk along Airport Avenue and discover some of the amazing work being created while planes zoom overhead!

Have a terrific weekend!
