Exploring Creative Santa Monica

March 27, 2008

The Weather Channel may be predicting grey skies on Saturday, but trust me, it’s going to be a beautiful day!  No silly clouds could possibly diminish the beautiful artworks that you’ll be able to see during the Santa Monica Airport Art Walk from 1:00 to 5:00 Saturday afternoon.  So, throw on an extra sweater and join us at the best Art Walk ever!

Also on Saturday, Laura Numeroff, the bestselling creator of If You Give a Mouse a Cookie, If You Give a Moose a Muffin and dozens of other hugely popular books for children will be reading and signing books while introducing us all to her latest creation, The Jellybeans and the Big Dance.  But if you’re going to be at the Art Walk and can’t make it in person, Every Picture Tells a Story will let you pre-order a personalized book and hold it for you or ship it anywhere you want.  Just give them a call at 310/451.2700 or visit them on line here.

While you’re on line, skip on over to the Twilight Dance Series website and vote on this year’s poster.  Nope, sorry, the schedule is not out yet, but check out the great poster designs and vote for your favorite.

And right now, before you forget, jot down Saturday, April 26, 2008, 10 am - 4 pm in your calendar so that you don’t miss the annual Virginia Avenue Project’s Green Gardens Tour

This Weekend at Santa Monica College
AIda on stage at SMC

Santa Monica College is one of our best local art assets bringing music, theatre, visual art and dance to our community at highly affordable prices.  It’s a banner weekend coming up with a production of the Tony Award-winning musical Aida opening on Thursday in the new Theatre Arts Building’s Main Stage.  Inspired by the Verdi opera, Elton John and Tim Rice have recreated the stirring tale of love between a soldier and an enslaved princess.  Performances on Fridays and Saturdays at 8:00 pm and Sundays at 2:00 pm.  Get your tickets on line here or by calling 310/434.3000.

The Music Department will present two concerts this weekend, the Phil Ranelin Quintet  at 7:00 pm on March 28 and the SMC Symphony Orchestra  on March 30 in the SMC Concert Hall.  Local jazz treasure Ranelin was named Best jazz Artist of 2005 by the LA Weekly Music Awards and when you hear him tear into that trombone of his, you’ll know why!  Then on Sunday at 4:00, the Santa Monica College Symphony Orchestra will perform Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto No. 2 and Ravel’s Mother Goose Suite.  For tickets or more information call 310/434.3000.

And don’t forget to stop by the SMC Ceramics Departments and the Art Mentor Program at the Santa Monica Airport Art Walk on Saturday.  Not only will you get a close-up look at the creation of the handmade ceramics, they’ll have terrific student work on sale!

The Youth Education/Entertainment Series (Y.E.S.) of the Santa Monica Theatre Guild brings to life the 1944 Newbery Honor children’s book, The Hundred Dresses, a timeless story about attempting to fit in, the painful consequences of teasing, and what is known today as “fashion bullying.” In its fourth year, the company takes on this more serious issue with outstanding results.

Movie Musical Classics at the Aero

Starting tonight at 7:30 with a Bob Fosse double bill featuring 1972 Oscar-winner Cabaret and 1979’s dazzling biographical epic All That Jazz, the Aero Theatre reminds us what fun it was when movies sang and danced.

Then on Friday night it’s another double feature with Singin' in the Rain starring Gene Kelly and Debbie Reynolds - a woman I consider a goddess.   And if that’s not enough, stick around for the second feature, Seven Brides for Seven Brothers which features some of the best dancing ever recorded on film.  Russ Tamblyn rules!

On Saturday night you can check out Gene Kelly’s first foray into direction when they’ll be screening Hello Dolly with a special discussion afterward with actor E.J. Peaker who played Minnie Faye.  I’ll bet she has some good stories!

Finally on Sunday it’s the movie version of the show that started it all, Showboat, the first book musical.  Adapted into a movie format numerous times, this Howard Keel, Ava Gardner, Kathryn Grayson, Agnes Moorehead and Marge and Gower Champion version is undoubtably the most lavish and beautifully staged.

I hope to see you all on Saturday at the Santa Monica Airport Art Walk!

Have a terrific weekend!
