It’s a beautiful day in the neighborhood as Mr. Rogers
would say, a beautiful weekend in fact. If you’re a
dance fan, a music fan, a theatre fan, a visual art
lover or a parent I’ve got at least one terrific
suggestion for your weekend.

Contemporary Dance at Miles Playhouse |

Circadian Rhythms
Oxford Street Dance Theater
8:00 pm
Thursday - Saturday
2:00 on Sunday
This Weekend and Next Weekend
The Miles Memorial Playhouse
1130 Lincoln Blvd
877/714.7668 - for tickets
Or buy tickets on line here
Circadian Rhythms are found in the
behavioral, biochemical or physiological
processes that take place over a twenty-four
hour period in any living being be it animal,
plant, fungi or your cousin Joe. The
Oxford Street Dance Theater's
Circadian Rhythms features five pieces,
each representing a different time of day. And
I promise that they'll be much more interesting
and beautiful than cousin Joe sleeping off a big
night on the living room couch. |

An Oasis in

Super Faulty Reconfiguration
Bruce Busby
Project Room 1
Santa Monica Museum Of Art
Tuesdays Through Sundays
May 24–August 9
Bergamot Station, Building G1
2525 Michigan Avenue
310/586-6488
Bruce Busby creates safe havens
from the impurities and "inhibitants" in the
environment. Like so many contemporary artists
working in large installations, the work is
almost impossible to describe by a layman like
myself, but totally marvelous to experience.
Busby hand sews these
multicolor Creativity Enhancement Shelters
that are sort of like teepees - with a bang. No
description I could give the Super
Faulty Reconfiguration would
possibly do it justice so I’m just going to tell
you to go see it for yourself - and enjoy! |

Music & Dance All Day Long at SMC |
 |
You could spend all day on Sunday at
Santa Monica College with a
delicious assortment of music and dance. Just
look at all this great stuff!
SMC Musical Theatre Workshop
2:00 pm
Sunday, June 1
Theatre Arts Studio Stage
1900 Pico Boulevard
The day starts with a nod to
all the Broadway fans in the house when the
College presents a program of solos, duets, and
ensemble selections from the musical
theatre performed by SMC music and theatre arts
students. Every semester these kids pull
together a show that reminds you what live
musical theatre is all about!
Pops Concert
SMC Wind Ensemble
4:00 pm
Sunday, June 1
Santa Monica College Concert Hall
1900 Pico Boulevard
This is the
always-entertaining "Pops" concert that will
feature many of our favorite tunes. Our own
City Council Member Kevin McKeown
will conduct the Ensemble. I
wonder which is more difficult, leading the
Santa Monica citizenry or leading the band?
SMC Concert Chorale
with the First Methodist Church Chancel Choir
& the Los Angeles Concert Orchestra
7:30 pm
Sunday June 1
First United Methodist Church
11th Street and Washington Avenue
310/393.8258
Three of the region’s best chorale groups will
join up to present a program that includes
Fauré's Requiem and a 100th anniversary tribute
to noted American composer Halsey Stevens. Come
early for the pre-concert Lecture at 6:30pm
presented by KUSC's Kimberlea Daggy
Folklórico de SMC
7:30 pm
Santa Monica College Theatre Arts Main Stage
1900 Pico Blvd
Having showcased choreography
from virtually every corner of the planet on
their tours throughout the US and Mexico, the
Folklórico de SMC returns home
to present a program that will include
Indonesian, West African, ballet, East Indian,
Spanish Flamenco, belly dance, Brazilian,
American hip-hop, Aztec, lyrical American jazz,
Latin American salsa, and Mexican choreography.
I’m most excited about El Venado (The
Deer Dance) based on the traditions of the Yaqui
Native Americans who lived along the border
between the Mexican state of Sonora and Arizona. |
