Exploring Creative Santa Monica

June 12, 2008

In this issue of the Palette, I’d like to send out very special birthday wishes to the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium!  June 16 will mark this landmark’s 50th year of operation.  Over the years the auditorium played host to the Academy Awards, presented concerts by some of the best bands ever – Elton John, the Clash, Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen – and in recent years been the site of exhibitions including trade fairs, art expositions, craft shows and environmental showcases featuring the latest in sustainable building and home design -  events which attract guests from all over Southern California. For a terrific overview of the Civic and its history, check out this terrific video produced by City TV

Someday, I’ll be 50 years old and when I am, I just hope that people will have as many terrific memories of me as they do of the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium. Please join me in wishing the happiest of birthdays to the Civic Auditorium and the truly marvelous staff that keeps this facility vital!

And now, take a look below for all the great stuff happening this weekend in Santa Monica.

Harold believes that anything is possible for a guy who dreams big. His life is full of potential and after five months of dating Wanda, Harold is about to pop the big question. He’s been training hard, his grades are competitive, and he “has more personality in my little finger than most of those other guys have in their little fingers.”  And when you’re a hand puppet, that’s very important!

I have the best time every year at this fabulous sale!  There will be more than forty antique and contemporary tile dealers, collectors, and contemporary artists selling beautifully crafted decorative art tiles on the California Heritage Museum's outdoor grounds.  On my first visit to the sale 5 years ago, I bought so many tiles I ended up having to remodel my kitchen.  You’ll find hundreds of tiles for sale - rare Malibu, Catalina, Calco, and Batchelder tiles, many old tile tables and murals, as well as colorful art pottery, Mexicana items and "Monterey" furniture. Don’t miss it!  Realist, Greg Miller, William Turner Gallery

And that wraps it up for this edition of the Palette - your guide to the best in Santa Monica!
