It's gonna be a scorcher this weekend
in the Southland - aren't you glad that here in Santa
Monica we'll still have our cool Pacific breezes to
rescue us from the the heat? We won't let those high
temperatures keep us inside on this glorious weekend!
I'm breaking my own rule this week
and offering up an event that happens on Wednesday of
next week - normally we only list things happening on
the weekend. The love story of Christopher Isherwood
and Don Bachardy is too important not
to get mentioned here and as a special salute
to California's historic legalization of same sex
marriage, I'm letting you all know about the special
screening on Wednesday of Chris & Don: A
Love Story.
I need to make a small correction to
last week's issue. Somehow, I got the impression that
Unbeatable Harold, the new show at the
Ruskin,
was a puppet show. It isn't. It has real live actors.
So, when you show up to see Unbeatable
Harold at the Ruskin this
weekend, you won't watching sock puppets. You'll be
watching real human beings with really interesting
relationships that are well worth an evening out!

16th Annual Juneteenth Celebration
11:00 am - 5:00 pm
Saturday, June 21
Virginia Avenue Park
Pico and Cloverfield
310/458.8688
The Juneteenth entertainment
and art fair commemorates the day in 1865 when
slaves in Texas finally received news of their
freedom through the Emancipation
Proclamation. Juneteenth has become an integral
part of African-American history and an occasion
for nationwide celebrations in honor of freedom,
dignity and community pride. This year's event
will showcase a great line-up of entertainment
including gospel and blues singer
Chiquita Tolten, LA's top ambient band
Driving Words, comedian
Annie McKnight and 14-year-old tap
prodigy Thomas Scott. And if
doesn't entice you, there will be vendors
offering up Memphis style BBQ, hush puppies,
watermelon and other delectable treats as well
as booths offering ethnic clothing, jewelry and
arts. Juneteenth is definitely this weekend's
most fun and relaxing family experience.

For the past three years, the City has been
seeking budding Spielbergs,
Altmans, Scorceses,
and David Leans. Is this the
year that we'll be able to see 2025's Oscar
winner's directorial debut? You never know.
So, it's best just to go, write down the names,
save your program, and when that brilliant young
director steps onto the stage at the
Kodak Theatre, you can say to your
friends, "Well, it's about time! I've been in
love with her work since 2008!" And they'll all
think you're so cool.
Admission is FREE but they do
expect a full house so if you'd like to attend
please call (310) 458-8634 (x8634) and leave
your name, number of tickets and a phone number.

Chris & Don: A Love Story
7:30 pm
Wednesday, June 25
Aero Theatre
1348 Montana (at 14th)
310 496-3146
Christopher Isherwood and
Don Bachardy's relationship
stands as one of the great love stories of our
time - a story that began on the beaches of
Santa Monica and continued for 35 years in their
Santa Monica Canyon home. Without benefit of
marriage, this couple shared their love and
their art with one another and the world. In
this week when same sex couples have finally won
the right to marry, it is only fitting to honor
this historic union.
On Wednesday night, a special screening on
Chris & Don: A Love Story
will benefit the
Santa Monica Conservancy. Then next
weekend, Don Bachardy
opens his home for an extremely rare intimate
tour and reception. |
