So how was your 4th? Mine was spent squeezed into a
subcompact with 2 seven-year-olds and a four-year-old on
sugar highs from birthday cake and ice cream. Just in
case you're planning a similar experience for some
upcoming special occasion, I'd advise against it. In
fact, this week we've to two terrific activities for
kids - neither of which involve tiny cars, cake, ice
cream or the need for tranquilizers. And for the
grown-ups, there's theatre and visual art that will fill
your imagination better than cake and ice cream ever
could - and this comment is coming from one of the
world's biggest fans of cake and ice cream!
Pericles Redux is the tastiest
theatrical treat you could hope for and what on earth
could I say about the buzz you're gonna get at the
Hi Fructose exhibition? I think
the title gives you all the information you need. Have
a great weekend everyone!
And before I forget - The
Spanish Harlem Orchestra will be performing at the
Twilight Dance Series tonight. They're one of the
best salsa bands and the nation, so put on your dancing
shoes and head to the pier tonight and join me in a
Mambo!

I know from experience how
difficult it can be to get a child to actually
read a book. Well, here's a terrific way to
introduce kids to literature - let them create
their own books and then maybe they'll be
intrigued by the ones in the library. Artist
Karen Chu of
zushibooks.com will employ extraordinary
papers and clever binding techniques to make a
one-of-a-kind books using ingenious folding and
binding techniques, collage, and even a little
puppetry. |

Mr. Popper isn't unhappy
exactly. He just wishes he had seen something of
the world before meeting Mrs. Popper and
settling down. Fascinated with polar
exploration, he sends a fan letter to Admiral
Drake, who responds by sending a gift -- a
penguin! I remember reading this book as a kid
and sending out letters to Jane Goodall and
various other naturalists hoping for a
chimpanzee, a baby elephant, a small tiger or a
koala bear. I strongly suspect my mother never
mailed them.

Our local hotbed of creativity, the

invited former head of the Los Angeles Cultural
Affairs Department Adolfo V. Nodal
to curate the latest installment of their
Future of Nations series. The
work runs the gamut of disciplines: sculpture,
photographic, installation, printmaking, video
and sound. Each work promises to transcend the
superficial and resonate with environmental
issues and hopefully stimulate audiences into
taking action on their own. Along with this
fascinating exhibition, visiting artists from
Australia, Taiwan and other exotic locales will
open their studios so you can get an intimate
look at their work process.
Artists include: Ala
Plastica, Lauren Bon, BULBO, CoLabART (Lynn

Hi Fructose Lowbrow
|
 |
HI-FRUCTOSE
Group Art Exhibition
8:00 pm – 11:30 pm
Saturday, July 12
Reception & Party
Exhibition runs through August 2
CopraNason Gallery
Bergamot Station
2525 Michigan Avenue - T5
310/829.2156
Bergamot's hippest, most
happening gallery will be hosting one of their
famous (notorious?) opening night parties on
Saturday night for Hi-Fructose.
The latest issue of this hot selling magazine
was released last weekend and sold out in a
flash but Copra Nason will have
a limited number of copies available along with
some very cool Hi-Fructose
t-shirts. Rounding out the evening will be an
outstanding variety of Hi-Fructose
refreshments - cakes, candy, hot pretzels, some
very special surprises and live music from the
Cabinet of Curiousitoes.
It's going to be an art party to remember - or
you might wake up in a fog on Sunday morning not
remembering a moment of it while wondering what
on earth you did last night - but if you're
lucky you'll have a new work of art by one of
the hot
low-brow artists in this group exhibition
that will make that hangover totally
worthwhile. |
