Exploring Creative Santa Monica

July 31, 2008

So, who else had a great time at Glow?  We were expecting 25,000 people.  We would have been thrilled with 50,000 people.  And we got 200,000 people!   At any given time, up to 70,000 could be found on the Santa Monica Pier and the surrounding beach and park, all entranced by the exciting range of artworks and performances.  Even the legendary grunion, the inspiration for the event, put in an appearance – to the delight of the thousands of people on the beach to greet them! What a night!  Check out the Glow website for some terrific pictures of the event and let us know what you thought.  We're getting ready to start planning for 2010 and we'd definitely like to get your feedback.

This week-end, we're going to have a much more low-key event - and terrific fun for all involved!  Jazz on the Lawn returns to Santa Monica City Hall with the first of five fabulous jazz bands.  Michael Sullivan leads off on August 3rd, followed by Louis Van Taylor on August 10th, Billy Porter and Friends of Reprise on the 17th, Russ Mullen and the Jazz Associates on August 24th and wrapping it all up will be Opa Opa on August 31st.  Each concert starts at 5:00 pm and there's plenty of free parking in the nearby Civic Auditorium Parking Lot and validated parking in the Civic Center Parking Structure.  I hope to see you all there!

It's simply amazing when you think of all the great things that have come out of the Otis College of Art and Design.  But Santa Monica Museum of Art's Lisa Milandri was not intimidated by the breadth of the institution's influences.  Milandri  brought it all together in an exhibition featuring painting, architecture, graphic design, fashion design, new media, printmaking, sculpture, animation, public art, poetry, artists' books, ceramics, photography, music, and digital art from more than 60 members of Otis' faculty.  Currently celebrating its 90th anniversary, the school honors the many faculty members who have taught and mentored generations of artists and designers to enrich our society and culture.

Did you know that there are bridges over the Los Angeles River as beautiful as anything over the Seine or the Arno.  I had no idea.  But David Eddington did and his paintings depict these forgotten concrete monoliths exquisitely.   Fourteen L.A. River bridges were built between 1909 and 1938 forming a unique collection that embodies an LA of a different era. Many of these gems are slated for alteration or demolition and the Los Angeles Conservancy is working to protect them.  A substantial portion of sales from the exhibition will go directly to the L.A. Conservancy in their fight to save the bridges over the Los Angeles River.  So, buy some art, save a bridge.  Doesn't that sound like a great idea?

And that wraps it up for this edition of the Palette - your guide to the best in Santa Monica!
