ARGUMENT AGAINST MEASURE JJ

We all care about our citizens - but Measure JJ is not the answer!

While Measure JJ may have good intentions, this seriously flawed ordinance is wrought with serious unintended consequences.

Measure JJ will force cuts in vital services!

Measure JJ will cost the City $2,000,000 - $3,000,000 in the first year alone for increased salaries to City employees, increases in payments to City contractors and more City bureaucracy; and the costs will mount every year.

This is not the time to be requiring the City to absorb millions of dollars of new costs annually which will inevitably force reductions in funding for schools, parks, public safety, neglected capital improvements and other crucial services.

Measure JJ discriminates

Measure JJ discriminates  by forcing certain selected businesses within an arbitrary portion of Santa Monica to pay a minimum wage which is more that 80% higher than anywhere else in California while their competitors in and around Santa Monica are not required to do so.

Measure JJ will result in the loss of jobs for our young adults

By requiring larger businesses to increase the minimum wage by over 80%, Measure JJ will eliminate job opportunities for young and unskilled workers needing an opportunity to get a summer or part-time job or to enter the work force to start a career.

MEASURE JJ IS A BAD IDEA.  It will hurt local residents by forcing the City to pay millions of dollars in new costs while, at the same time, damaging the local economy by eliminating jobs for those who need them most.  And it will have these effects through an unfair and discriminatory system.

Measure JJ - a risk we can't afford.  Please vote "NO" on Measure JJ.
