SUBJECT:  Recommendation   to   Award   Bid   to   Provide  Noise
          Attenuating  Intercom  Headsets  and  Radio  Interface,
          Bid 2359

Introduction

This report concerns  award of bid  to provide noise  attenuating
intercom headsets and  radio interface  for the  Fire Suppression
Division, Fire  Department, in  the total  amount of  $22,844.50,
including applicable sales tax.  This headset system will be used
to enable emergency teams  to communicate with dispatchers  while
responding to emergencies.

Background

In response to published Notices Inviting Bids (published  May 14
and  15, 1991) to provide noise attenuating intercom headsets and
radio interface in accordance with City specifications, bids were
received  and publicly opened and read on May 28, 1991.  Proposal
forms were mailed to three vendors and notices were advertised in
accordance with  City  Charter  and  Municipal  Code  provisions.
Three proposals were received as follows:

     L. N. Curtis & Sons                          $22,844.50
     Special T Fire Equipment, Inc.               $23,642.72
     Pacific Safety Equipment Company             $24,024.89

Staff has  evaluated the  low bid  and finds  that it  meets City
specifications.

Budget/Financial Impact

Fiscal Year 1990/91 appropriation authority for this purchase  is
in the Fire Suppression Division, Fire Department, account number
01-800-313-00000-8804-00000.

Recommendation

It is recommended that  the award of Bid  #2359 be made to  L. N.
Curtis & Sons  in  the  total  amount  of  $22,844.50,  including
applicable sales tax, as the lowest and best bidder.
