SUBJECT:  Award of Contract to Resurface the Lobby  and  Restroom
          Floors  and  Main  Entrance  Stairs in the Santa Monica
          Civic Auditorium

Introduction

This report recommends that City  Council  award  a  contract  to
resurface  the  lobby,  restrooms and main entrance stairs in the
Santa Monica  Civic  Auditorium  to  Corradini  Corporation,  the
lowest responsible bidder, in the amount of $129,400.00.

Background

During the FY  1990-91  budget  process,  City  Council  approved
funding  for  resurfacing  the lobby and restroom floors, and the
main entrance stairs of the Civic Auditorium.  The existing vinyl
flooring  was  installed  in the 1950's and was in a deteriorated
condition requiring constant maintenance and repair.   The  vinyl
surfacing material that covered the floor deteriorated to a point
that it had to be removed.  Temporary carpeting was purchased and
is  being  used  to  cover  the  bare  concrete  floor until this
proposed resurfacing project is complete.

Due to activities and events currently scheduled  for  the  Civic
Auditorium,  this  project necessitates a short project schedule,
beginning June 29, 1992 with a completion date of July 24,  1992.
The contractor is aware of the schedule and has agreed to perform
the tasks accordingly.

A Notice Inviting Bids was published on March 30 and 31, 1992, in
The  Outlook.   Plans and specifications were subsequently issued
to five contractors.  On April 28, 1992, two bids were  received,
publicly opened and read aloud by the Deputy City Clerk.

Bids received were as follows:

     Corradini Corporation                         $ 129,400.00

     Eberhard Roofing (Floor Division)             $ 129,510.00

             City Engineer's Estimate . . . . .    $ 120,000.00

Budget/Financial Analysis

                         FUNDS REQUIRED

               Contract . . . . . . . . . . $ 129,400.00

               Contingency  (15%). . . . .  $  19,500.00

                                   Total    $ 148,900.00

Funds    are     available     in     CIP     Account     Number:
32-740-621-20092-8900-99284, "Replace Lobby Floor", in the amount
of $148,900.00

Recommendation

It is recommended that City Council:

 1.  Award a contract to resurface the lobby and restroom floors,
     and   main  entrance  stairs  of  the  Civic  Auditorium  to
     Corradini Corporation, the lowest responsible bidder, in the
     amount of $129,400.00 and;

 2.  Authorize the City Engineer to issue  any  necessary  change
     orders  to  complete additional work in conformance with the
     Administrative Instruction on change orders.
