SUBJECT:  Recommendation to Award Bid to Furnish Materials, Labor
          and  Installation  to  Repair/Replace  Auditorium Stage
          Counterweight Fly System, Bid #2411

Introduction

This report concerns award of bid to furnish materials, labor and
installation to repair/replace Auditorium stage counterweight fly
system for the Civic Auditorium Division, Cultural and Recreation
Services Department, in the total amount of $38,603.11, including
applicable sales tax.

Background

Notices Inviting Bids were published  May 15  and  18,  1992,  to
furnish  materials,  labor  and  installation  to  repair/replace
Auditorium stage counterweight fly system in accordance with City
specifications.   The  stage counterweight fly system consists of
ropes, cable, hardware and  electric  lines  that  are  used  for
rigging  lights,  draperies  and scenery during productions.  The
current system was originally installed in 1958.

Bids were received and publicly opened and read on June 4,  1992.
Proposal  forms  were  mailed  to  three vendors and notices were
advertised in accordance with City  Charter  and  Municipal  Code
provisions.  Two proposals were received as follows:

1.   Valley Hoist and Rigging                        $38,603.11
2.   Grosh Scenic Studios                            $45,892.00

Staff has evaluated the low bid and  finds  that  it  meets  City
specifications.

Budget/Financial Impact

Fiscal Year 1991/92 appropriation authority for this purchase  is
in   the   Capital  Improvement  Program  Budget  account  number
32-740-621-20092-8900-99286, "Replace Auditorium Stage Hardware."

Recommendation

It is recommended that the award of Bid #2411 be made  to  Valley
Hoist  and  Rigging  in the total amount of $38,603.11, including
applicable tax, as the lowest and best bidder.
