Item 6-J Council Meeting: 2/25/97 Santa Monica, CA TO: Mayor and City Council FROM: City Staff SUBJECT: Donation of Used Cushman Parking Scooters INTRODUCTION This report requests that the City Council authorize the donation of two used Cushman parking scooters to the Santa Monica/Malibu School District for use by security staff at Santa Monica High School. Council approval is needed for the donation because City property is normally disposed of at auction. BACKGROUND Members of the Santa Monica Police Department work in conjunction with Santa Monica High School security officers on a daily basis. Members of the security staff have dispersed crowds and/or stopped potential criminal activity prior to the arrival of Santa Monica police officers. Their capability to respond to these activities has been hampered recently due to their only Cushman scooter breaking down and being deemed beyond repair. There are no district funds to replace this unit. The Santa Monica Police Department's Parking Enforcement Section is currently replacing several older Cushman scooters. These scooters will be auctioned in the near future. It is recommended that two of the scooters be donated to the high school security staff to allow them to continue to provide the quick response times that support Police Department personnel. BUDGET/FINANCIAL IMPACT The Fleet Maintenance Section estimated the auction value of each Cushman as $500.00. Therefore, the total estimated value of the two donated scooters is $1,000.00. These funds would otherwise go to the City's vehicle replacement fund. RECOMMENDATION It is recommended that the City Council authorize the donation of two used Cushman parking scooters to the Santa Monica/Malibu School District for use by Santa Monica High School security personnel.
