Introduction

This report recommends that the City Council adopt the attached resolution temporarily changing the regular meeting place for council meetings from Council Chambers to the Main Library Auditorium at 1343 6th Street, Santa Monica. Section 613 of the City Charter provides that the City Council hold its meetings in the City Council Chambers of the City Hall or at such other locations as the City Council may, by ordinance or resolution, designate.

Background

Renovation of the Council Chambers is scheduled to begin on December 9, 1998. Construction activities are expected to last up to four months. During this period of time, beginning Tuesday, December 15, 1998, staff recommends that the City Council hold its meetings in the auditorium of the Main Library. Staff is in the process of making temporary adjustments to the Main Library Auditorium to accommodate televised City Council meetings. Other meetings normally held in the Council Chambers will meet in the Main Library Auditorium during this period as well.

The following steps will be taken to notify the public of this change: Ads published in "Our Times" and "The Santa Monica Sun"; notices mailed to all agenda subscribers; notice posted on the City's website and aired on CityTV; notices posted in all public places where the agenda is currently posted; and appropriate signage at the Council Chambers and City Hall.

Budget Impact
