SUBJECT: Recommendation to Award Bid to Provide Millennium Tree Planting, Bid #2765
Introduction
This report recommends award of bid to provide millennium tree planting for the Parks and Sports Division, Community and Cultural Services Department, at specified unit prices, including labor, materials and applicable sales tax, with a three year maintenance contract.
Background
The Millennium Tree Planting Project calls for trees to be planted in open spaces along the City
=s streets and at selected school sites. The program is designed to add 2,000 new trees to increase canopy coverage and community forest as part of the Parks and Recreation master plan to enhance the community forest by 7,000 new trees over the next 20 years. The planting phase will commence no later than October 1, 1999, and the maintenance phase will begin as soon as each tree has been planted. Maintenance of the new trees will be the responsibility of the contractor and will run for a period of three years from the date the last tree is planted. The work activity necessary to plant these trees to coincide with the Millennium celebration exceeds the capacity of staff.In response to published Notices Inviting Bids (published June 30 and July 1, 1999) in accordance with City specifications, bids were received and publicly opened and read on July 15, 1999. Proposal forms were mailed to six vendors and notices were advertised in accordance with City Charter and Municipal Code provisions. Two proposals were received as follows:

Staff has evaluated the bid submitted by West Coast Arborists, Inc. and finds that it meets City specifications.
