Council Meeting Wrap-Up

March 27, 2001

At their meeting of March 27, 2001, the Santa Monica City Council received a report from the Disabilities Task Force, which met from November 2000 through February 2001 on issues facing the disabled community, and directed staff to cost-out and consider timelines and other factors related to the Task Force's four recommendations, and return with specific implementation recommendations.

The City Council also received a report from the City Manager on staff work completed in the past few months on aspects of the Living Wage Proposal Study received by the Council last summer from Dr. Robert Pollin of the Political Economic Research Institute (University of Massachusetts, Amherst). The Council directed the City Attorney to return with a draft living wage ordinance for Council consideration prior to completion of the budget process for 2001-2002 (i.e., before budget study sessions in late May and budget adoption in June).

Among other items on the agenda, the Council adopted ordinances related to signage, employee retirement, and speed limits (see February 27 and March 6 wrap-ups for details); gave authorization for a construction management contract and financing plan for the proposed Civic Center parking structure; kept South Beach parking rates at $5 for the coming summer, with authorization to increase the rate to $6 beginning Memorial Day weekend 2002; okayed a contract for construction of the Gateway Coastal Corridor landscaping project; authorized loan of 20 used Big Blue Buses to the Salt Lake City Olympic Committee for transportation use at the 2002 Winter Olympics; and approved city co-sponsorship of Earth Day 2001 public events.

Specifics on items from this meeting are included in the staff reports posted with the agenda on the city's website at santa-monica.org/cityclerk/council/agendas/2001/a20010327.htm.

The next City Council meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, April 10, 2001 at 5:15 p.m. for Consent Calendar, followed by closed session, resuming at 6:45 p.m. for the balance of the public meeting in the Council Chamber at City Hall, 1685 Main Street.

NOTE: This wrap-up is not an official record of Council action. The official record is posted by the City Clerk on this website at santa-monica.org/cityclerk/council/agendas/2001/ as soon as possible after the meeting.
