Article 34 of the California Constitution provides that no City can develop low income
housing projects until a majority of the voters approve.
- Prop I is a RADICAL CHARTER AMENDMENT that allows 250+ low income units to be developed
every year.... forever! Statewide, all Article 34 ballots but one, have indicated a finite
number of units in general authorizations. Other voters have demanded and retained their
rights to review and vote. Amending the Charter deprives you of your right to vote.
- Prop I allows the City to use local parking and building fees; utility and bed tax;
traffic fines; and the entire general fund moneys. To develop 250+ low income units a year
the City will have an incentive to increase the above fees, create new ones or redirect
City funds to develop more low income housing projects.
- There are only 4 ways to develop such a large number of low income units each year:
- Rezone portions of the single family zones for multifamily housing
- Buy apartments or condos in existing buildings
- Increase building size and height In the multifamily zones
- Flood the commercial zones with low income housing projects
DEMAND TO KNOW WHERE THESE LOW INCOME PROJECTS WILL GO.
- Prop I will now permit the City to OWN these projects. City owned and managed low income
housing projects have proven disastrous in countless cities. Nothing can stop the City
from using eminent domain and force the sale of any property.
- These units will NOT be exclusively for Santa Monica residents. Funding packages for low
income projects use a variety of sources that mandate open eligibility for all low income
qualified persons.
This disastrous power-grab does not hold the people of Santa Monica in
high regard and paves the way for frightful abuse. Vote No on Prop I
