ARGUMENT IN FAVOR OF PROPOSITION X

Santa Monica and Malibu take great pride in their schools.  We want to ensure that our children receive the highest quality education possible. Proposition X will help us meet that standard without any overall tax increase!

After comprehensive research, a broad-based task force of Santa Monica and Malibu community leaders found that the school district already makes extensive use of state, federal and private grants. The group, which recommended the school district place Proposition X on the ballot, determined Prop X was the only way to get the job done.

The Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District needs to complete the job it began eight years ago in preparing for the next century. Every school in the District will benefit from Proposition X.

By law, funds raised through Proposition X must be used for capital improvement projects, such as:

  • Constructing and acquiring new classrooms to accommodate both class size reduction and increased resident enrollment;

  • Allowing schools to restore and provide additional space for computer technology, music, art, and childcare programs;

  • Reimbursing Northridge Earthquake repair costs unfunded by FEMA;

  • Bringing our high schools up to standard;

  • Improving disabled access;

  • Improving school grounds and ensuring high-quality maintenance.

All this for no additional cost to taxpayers! Through the refinancing of existing bonds combined with the projected growth of the District's assessed valuation, the District can sell $42 million of General Obligation Bonds without increasing property taxes. Thus, there will be no net tax increase when the bond passes!

Join the Santa Monica League of Women Voters, Chambers of Commerce, the Civic Forum, Santa Monicans for Renters' Rights, Santa Monica Youth Athletic Foundation, Bill Mortensen, parents, educators and leaders throughout Santa Monica and Malibu. Vote YES on Proposition X!
