  Welcome to the Community Recreation Division! 

  The Community Recreation Division provides recreation and active living programs at the City’s parks, beach and
  recreation facilities.

  The Division manages

  • the City’s award-winning Swim Center, offering swim instruction, fitness classes, events
    and recreation and competitive swimming opportunities

  • adult sports leagues

  • the Memorial Park Gym

  • the Cove Skatepark

  • the Playground Partnership project; and

  • the Community Classes program offering youth and adult
    classes and

  • youth camps in a variety of specialties including the arts, sports, dance and fitness.

  The Division also oversees the Santa Monica Adaptive Recreation & Sports (SMARS) program providing social
  and recreation opportunities for people with disabilities including participation in the Westside Special Olympics
  program.

  In addition, the Division develops policies and issues permits for use of facilities, fields, courts, community garden
  plots, community events and coordinates film permits for parks and the beach.

Are you interested in teaching a class with the City of Santa Monica? Do you have a new and exciting class or activity you want to share with the community? If so, please fill out the 2010/2011 Community Classes RFP and submit it to our office. PICKLEBALL... AN EXCITING NEW SPORT!

Pickleball is a fun game that is played on a badminton court with the net lowered to 34 inches at the center. It is played with a perforated plastic baseball (similar to a whiffle ball) and wood or composite paddles. It is easy for beginners to learn, but can develop into a quick, fast-paced, competitive game for experienced players. Pickleball is a combination of Ping-Pong, tennis, and badminton and has been enjoyed for over 20 years by people of all ages.  For more information call Memorial Park Gym at 310.458.2244
