To maintain water safety and maximize public recreational opportunities on Santa Monica State Beach, all youth surf camps and all surfing instruction for compensation require City authorization.

The City uses a competitive process to select the following types of surf instruction providers: 

• City Providers - Instructors are contracted to conduct the City's surfing classes and camps.  The City is responsible for marketing the classes and managing the registration process.  The City receives a percentage of the registration fees.
   

• Independent Providers - A limited number of instructors are selected and permitted to provide youth surf camps as well as group and private surfing lessons.  The City receives a minimum of 15% of gross receipts.

Applications are no longer being accepted for the current season.
