Active Living

What's Active Living?

Active Living is the integration of physical activity into our daily routines.

In response to an alarming national trend toward obesity and disease, the City is committed to promoting active lifestyles for the health and well being of our community.

With Santa Monica's wealth of recreational facilities and our year-round temperate climate, there's no better place to get out there and get active!

NEW! Don't forget about the Original Muscle Beach in Santa Monica!

Starting Points

With helpful maps, links to resources and more, the City's first two Active Living programs are a great place to start on the road to fitness.

Recreational Facilities

The Community Aquatics program at Santa Monica's Swim Center (1700 Pico Blvd) offers swim instruction, fitness classes, competitive swim teams and fun events.

Housed at the Senior Recreation Center in beautiful Palisades Park, Senior Programs provides social and active recreation to the Santa Monica Senior Community. A Senior Latino Club also operates from Virginia Avenue Park.

There's always something going on at the award-winning Virginia Avenue Park (2200 Virginia Avenue). Take advantage of the basketball courts, jogging path, wide open green space, playground, splash pad, and PAL youth fitness gym. The City makes it easy to get active at VAP through a full compliment of classes, programs and special events.

The Cove Skatepark (1401 Olympic Blvd) has dedicated hours for skateboarding, biking or rollerblading. New for this year, skateboarding instruction will be offered. Also, The Cove now has lights! Stop by and skate well into the night.

Childcare - Recreation - Enrichment - Sports - Together!

Working in partnership with SMMUSD, CREST offers a wide range of programs to keep school-age kids active, in both mind and body.

Members of the community, the Santa Monica Police Department, and City staff partner on programs that keep youth moving. Enjoy sports, special events, enrichment opportunities and more through PAL, centrally located at Memorial Park (1401 Olympic Blvd).

Active Sustainability

By leaving the car at home and opting for an alternative mode of transport,

your active lifestyle can make a significant positive impact on the environment.

Check out the City's Sustainable City Plan for more info.

Classes & Other Programs

The City's quarterly newsletter has a comprehensive listing of our fitness classes and opportunities. From surfing to dog training, RecScape has it all.
