GARDEN PLOT MAKEOVER DAY
@ MAIN STREET!
We
collaborated with the Office of Sustainability and
the Environment to conduct a Garden Plot Makeover Day at
Main Street on Saturday, April 28th. The City's Water
Resource Specialist, Russell Ackerman, along with a
group of volunteer Garden Honor Academy graduate
students hosted a hands-on workshop and rehabilitated
several garden plots. Participants learned how to
properly mulch pathways, work in raised beds, start a
compost bin and install irrigation drip systems. The
day was part of an educational series and the makeovers
served as examples to gardeners and students who may
want to do this themselves. This was an excellent
opportunity for gardeners to ask questions and get
hands-on training techniques to improve their individual
plots and the gardens as a whole. Staff hopes to be
able to provide this workshop annually and rotate
between the three different community garden sites in
Santa Monica.

VOLUNTEER “GARDEN BEES” WORKING IN THE COMMUNITY!
Volunteer community gardeners Lisa Goodwin, Cheri
Fisher and Shawn Nadery spent a recent afternoon at
the SM Boys and Girls Club helping to get their two
large planters ready for spring/summer planting. A
handful of wonderful, energetic kids from the
program and some of the staff also helped out! They
cleared out the old plant material, dug up the soil,
and added 10 bags of compost material. It was hard
with clay and rocks – thankfully Shawn brought great
tools! They will plant lots of tomatoes,
herbs, carrots, peas and beans that the kids will
maintain and harvest and, together with the staff,
include in the meals they cook on site.
This Boys and Girls Club site, on Santa Monica
Blvd., is unique because it is located on the
premises of a Community Corp. apartment that
provides housing for low-income families. So, not
only do the kids live on site but they also get to
play and learn on site! And now, they will
garden on site! Some of the parents stopped by
to check out what we were doing and said they would
love to help, too.
Thanks
to Lisa, Cheri and Shawn for a wonderful afternoon
and all of their hard work.
SPRING CLEANING @ JOHN ADAMS MIDDLE SCHOOL
A
wonderful group of garden volunteers spent time
cleaning up the John Adams Middle School (JAMS)
garden beds on Saturday, March 10, 2012. Some of
our Community Gardeners participate in a joint
program with the JAMS Science Magnet Program by
working with the teachers and students to keep the
beds planted and maintained and assisting with
teaching seminars.
The beds
were cleared of old plant material and weeds (we
found a ton of aphids in the old broccoli!), and new
soil, along with some lovely compost material, was
added. The soil will be kept watered for a week or
so to make sure the compost gets mixed in well and
then we will be ready for Spring planting! The plan
is to plant lots of leafy veggies, herbs and
flowers.
A HUGE
thank you to the great group of volunteers including
Michelle (waiting list gardener), Annick Bellorde
and daughter Cathy (not pictured), Jake and Jenny
Biechele, Lisa Goodwin, Howard Meibach, and David
Dresher.
