Cultural Identity:
Santa Monica has been a destination and a haven for
creative individuals since its inception. Santa Monica’s cultural community is
central to the city’s identity, contributing to the economy, the
environment and the overall quality of life of this unique beach city. It
is essential to Santa Monica’s future that we recognize, preserve
and strengthen this identity – Creative People in a Creative Community.
Project Description:
The City of Santa Monica is preparing a master plan
to guide the continued development of the community’s cultural resources. The
intent of the planning process is to forge a common vision for the future
of the arts and culture in Santa Monica. The plan will identify
community priorities and articulate the policies and strategies
that will be required to achieve those priorities and make Santa Monica
an even better environment for creativity in all forms.
Project Timeline:
The plan will be developed in two major phases. The first phase will
continue through the summer and will focus on community input and research. Then,
from September through January preliminary reports and a draft of the plan
will be circulated for additional public review and comment. The
final draft will be presented to City Council in early 2007.
Participate:
The planning process will offer a large number of
different opportunities for participation, including a broad array of workshops,
community meetings, and a phone survey. We are also going to be developing an on-line
directory of the many creative people who live and work in Santa Monica. So
tune-in, drop-in, sign-up and let your voice be heard!
