Basic Curriculum for CITs in CREST Youth Sports Leagues and Santa Monica Sports Experience and Camp Santa Monica

INTRODUCTION

The Youth Sports Mentor Program is for young adults ages 15-17 who are looking to expand their leadership skills and gain valuable work experience.

PROGRAM GOALS

The Youth Sports Mentor Program gives the youth an opportunity to develop their team management skills and coaching ability in our youth sports program as an “Assistant Coach or Coach-in-Trainingand by developing their group management skills and activity planning in our sports camp program as a “Counselor-in-Training These goals are achieved through leadership and opportunities to lead games, practices, organized activities and assisting with supervision of program participants.

The Youth Sports Mentor Program incorporates the following components:

  • Working with Lead Staff to set and work towards personal goals
  • Attending staff trainings and all staff meetings
  • Working closely with Lead Staff in planning and organizing practices, activities and games.

EXPECTATIONS FOR CITs

  • Develop their personal initiative
  • Develop their sense of responsibility
  • Develop their leadership skills
  • Maturity level must be that of a lead staff (You are not a participant!)
  • Ability to create and maintain boundaries between themselves and program participants despite being close in age.
  • Participants will work along side the lead staff to plan, supervise, and lead all program activities.
  • Be a role model to youth sports and sports camp participants
  • Work with lead staff to keep the programs running smoothly

From the program participants’ perspective, CITs are full staff members and are due the same attention and respect as all other staff members charged with leading activities, creating a positive environment, enforcing safety rules, negotiating interpersonal issues, and serving as roles models.  However, due to their age and minimal to no work experience, CITs are not able to supervise program participants without another staff member being present (ie. CITs can lead activities, give instruction etc…- but cannot bear the ultimate responsibility for participant supervision).
