Ellen Khokha

Ellen Khokha, founder of The Growing Place nearly 25 years ago, has been an outspoken proponent of improving the wages and benefits to persons employed in early childhood, a field that remains dominated by women.  An adjunct faculty member at Santa Monica College, Ms. Khokha has had tremendous impact on the students that she teaches and actively participates in the Santa Monica Child Care & Early Education Task Force, North Bay Chapter of the Southern California Association for the Education of Young Children and the California Mentor Program.

Cory Rytterager

Investigator Cory Rytterager, a child abuse and domestic violence investigator with the Santa Monica Police Department for over 30 years, is recognized for working long hours and having one of the most difficult investigative responsibilities in the SMPD.   Ms. Rytterager is the first person contacted to interview victims of child abuse and evaluates the situation to determine the best interests of the child. Through her tireless effort to develop and continuously network with professional liaisons in the community, Ms. Rytterager is widely known for her commitment to the children and families of the Santa Monica community.

Natalie Dewberry

Officer Natalie Dewberry, a pioneering veteran of the Santa Monica Police Department (SMPD), is an exemplary role model for female officers, and girls and boys at the Police Activities League.  For 20 years, she has demonstrated an unwavering commitment in her numerous roles with the SMPD, always helping women and children who are victims of poverty and violence.  Known affectionately as “the Bank of Dewberry” at the Police Activities League, Officer Dewberry has bought clothes, shoes and school supplies for children in need.

Cristina Callazos

Cristina Callazos emigrated from Spain to Santa Monica when she was in the fourth grade, at that time speaking only Spanish.  A graduate of Brentwood School with a 3.7 GPA, Cristina was an active member of the Boys and Girls Club of Santa Monica Leaders in Training Program, completing more than 60 hours of work necessary to receive the Personal Progress Award at her church.  Cristina received the Girl Scout Gold Award--the highest award possible for a Girl Scout- attained by only 5 percent of senior scouts in the country.  In September, Ms. Callazos began her first year at Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah.
