About Rosie's
Girls
Who Can Participate?
Girls entering grades 6-8 in the upcoming 2012-13 school year.
One of the most unique experiences
for girls happens here in Santa Monica! Rosie’s Girls is an award winning
specialty camp designed especially for middle school girls to build self-esteem,
leadership and physical confidence through an exploration of the trades and
other nontraditional activities. During this intensive summer program, go
“behind the scenes” and experience what it takes to manage a city. Payment
plans are available upon request.
· Develop critical thinking
and leadership skills while exploring issues such as gender roles, body image
and social pressure.
· Learn skills in carpentry,
welding, plumbing, firefighting, tree trimming and other trades.
· Engage in fun, physical
challenges, including surfing, kayaking,
sailing, self-defense, a ropes course and more.
· Make creative expression
projects, such as a mask or scrapbook.
· Participate in an exclusive
community service or social action project.
Our award-winning
curriculum (California Park & Recreation Society "Best of the Best"
Award winner and League of California Cities Helen Putnam Award for
Excellence) also includes creative expression (mask-making,
furniture design & journal writing), physical
challenges (sailing, kayaking & a ropes course) and other unique experiences (role-playing as
City Council members at City Hall & self-defense with the Santa Monica
Police Department's D-Tac Team)! Girls develop critical thinking
skills as they explore issues such as gender roles, body image, and
social pressure.
Why Trades?
Whether in a shop or
applied to "real world" projects, trades activities
offer an unusual and especially powerful vehicle for
girls to develop a broader sense of themselves and
their capabilities. Trades activities
challenge girls to learn self-reliance, expand their
math and science skills, develop new areas of
physical confidence, expand the range of
careers they might envision for themselves, and push
past preconceived limitations.
