Did you know that more than one-third (33%+) of
Santa Monica residents are over the age of 50,
and that the percent of adults 65 and older will
increase dramatically over the next 10 to 15
years?
How to best meet the current and future needs of
adults 50+ has been a focus of the City. An evaluation that
culminated in the recently released report,
Evaluation of Services for
Older Adults in Santa Monica, outlines
recommendations for innovative ways to meet the
needs of current seniors and the emerging needs
and desires of boomers as they make their way
into the second half of life. The report
includes innovative recommendations for
improving the programming for both older seniors
and boomers - from health/fitness, social
services, and social connection to educational
enrichment, community service and re-careering/employment.
Eager to move forward on improving programming
for adults 50+, the City has already brought new
programming to the Senior Center at 1450 Ocean
Avenue, worked closely with WISE & Healthy Aging
on plans to expand the Dial-A-Ride program,
taken steps to improve coordination of services
for older seniors, received a state grant
awarded to the Santa Monica Public Library to
provide innovative, technology based programming
aimed at boomers, partnered with and supported
the Life Long Learning Older Adult Task Force in
creating a user-friendly Quick Reference Guide
for Older Adults.
The City will
continue planning and improving programs for
adults 50+. If you are interested in
