The Santa Monica Public Library is now offering docent-led tours of the new Main Library on Thursdays and Saturdays. Thursday tours take place at 12:30 and 6:30 p.m.  Saturday tours are at 12:30.  Tours, which begin in the Central Courtyard, or if raining, next to the Greeters’ Desk near the North entrance, last about 30 minutes.  No reservations are necessary.  The first tours are scheduled for Thursday, February 9 and Saturday February 11.

The docents, who participated in a six-week training program, will cover not only library collections, but also sustainability, history, art, and architecture of the new library, which opened on January 7 of this year.  An exciting feature of the library is the return of the Stanton Macdonald-Wright murals covering over 2,000 square feet, created in the mid-1930s for the Santa Monica Public Library.  The murals have been stored in the Smithsonian since the mid-1960s and have now returned to grace the walls of the new library.

For more information, the public may contact the Santa Monica Public Library at (310) 458-8600.
