Critically-acclaimed and award-winning author Jonathan Safran Foer appears at the Santa Monica College Pavilion (Gym), 1900 Pico Boulevard, on Sunday, April 23 at 3:00 p.m.

Jonathan Safran Foer's second novel, Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close, is the 2006 Santa Monica Citywide Reads featured title.  It follows the adventures of nine-year-old Oskar Schell as he attempts to learn more about a key found in his deceased father’s closet.  Set against a backdrop of post-9/11 New York City, the book highlights the importance of history and explores survival and grief, balancing tragedy with humor.  Foer's first novel, 2002's Everything Is Illuminated, won the National Jewish Book Award, and his short stories have been published by The New Yorker and The Paris Review.

"An Afternoon with Jonathan Safran Foer" features the author reading and discussing Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close, followed by question-and-answer and a book sale and signing courtesy of Borders. Co-sponsored by the Friends of the Santa Monica Public Library and the Santa Monica College Associates, this author presentation is open to the community and admission is free, with seating on a first arrival basis.
