Each year in California, hundreds of thousands of computers, monitors,
copiers, fax machines, printers, televisions and other electronic items
become "obsolete" as rapid advances in technology and an expanding
demand for new features accelerate the generation of "old" electronic
equipment (E-Waste).
Most electronic devices contain a variety of materials, including
metals, that can be recovered and used again. In addition, some
electronic products contain enough levels of certain materials that
render them hazardous and unacceptable for municipal trash disposal.
California law designates waste televisions and monitors as hazardous.
It is estimated that up to 75 percent of these outdated electronics are
in storage because people don't know what to do with them. But we do!
The City of Santa Monica’s Solid Waste Management Division will conduct
a FREE—that's right, FREE!—Public E-Waste Recycling Event on Saturday,
March 17. Clear your storage space of that technologically deficient
E-Waste by bringing it to the City Yards, 2500 Michigan Avenue (near
Olympic and Cloverfield) from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Please call the Solid Waste Management Division at (310) 458-8546 for
more information. Residents with disabilities may call (310) 458-8596
for a form to request a special pick-up.
