Ocean Park Boulevard Green Streets Project

GROUNDBREAKING EVENT MONDAY, DECEMBER 12TH!

Construction for the Ocean Park Boulevard “Complete Green Street” project begins the week of December 5th, 2011. This project is the result of many years of planning and collaboration between community members, City staff, and other local stakeholders. The end result will benefit of the Ocean Park neighborhood and the entire Santa Monica community as a model of sustainability, multi-modality and low-impact street design. From Nielson Way to Lincoln Blvd., Ocean Park Blvd. will be turned into a "Complete Green Street,” which will result in a better performing, enhanced streetscape that is pedestrian- and bicycle-oriented, attractive, green, and prevents urban run-off from entering the Santa Monica Bay.

Key Project Elements include:

  • Wider sidewalks

  • Parkway/storm water biofilter swales and infiltration areas, and a drip irrigation system

  • Over 100 new trees, new landscaping and medians

  • New marked crosswalks with enhanced overhead flashing beacons

  • More visible, painted bike lanes and traffic striping, and new artist-designed bike racks

  • Street furniture, trash and recycling cans, and 75 pedestrian-scaled light poles

  • Traffic signal improvements

  • Los Amigos Park storm improvements

In celebration of this exciting project, the City and the Ocean Park Association are hosting a small groundbreaking ceremony on Monday, December 12th at 10AM on the Ocean Park Library lawn. Street parking is available on Main Street, but attendees are also encouraged to bike, walk or use the Big Blue Bus.

The Ocean Park Boulevard "Green Streets" project was initiated in March 2008 at the request of the Santa Monica community.  The project aims to examine the portion of Ocean Park Boulevard west of Lincoln Blvd. to Neilson way, and to develop solutions to issues based on scale, character, health and safety, sustainability, landscaping, accessibility and circulation.

The below map depicts the project area, which includes over a half mile of vehicular right of way, more than 6000 linear feet of sidewalks, and involves pocket parks, two schools and the 4th Street overpass.

Construction of the Ocean Park Boulevard Green Street will begin in Fall 2011.  Please see the REFERENCE page to download the staff presentations.
