NEWS ITEM
7.22.2008: Please be aware that
the Ocean Park Concept Plan process is
undergoing several changes to take into
account environmental, analytical and
procedural requirements.
1.
Exploring Two Alternatives.
Because of the high initial cost estimates
of the popular
Alternative A (which includes sidewalk
widening, landscaped medians, a Class II
bike lane, and best practices in
sustainability), city staff, the consultant
team and the OPB Task Force advised taking a
second, less costly design alternative to
City Council as well (Alternative B
which was the second choice at community
meetings). It is universally agreed that
vetting two alternatives will offer the
decision makers a range of options with
associated costs for consideration and
ultimate approval.
It is expected that these changes will
extend the project timeline into fall
2009. Please see the revised timeline
here.
2.
Public Meetings.
Since January 2009, staff has presented the
two alternative concept designs to the City
Council, the Recreation and Parks
Commission, the Planning Commission and the
Architectural Review Board.
The public meetings will happen in advance of
the next community workshop, which has not
been scheduled yet. Please stay tuned
for more information about how you can
participate in the public meetings.
3. Environmental Review (CEQA).
Staff is currently reviewing both concept
designs for conformance with the California
Environmental Quality Act (CEQA). Because
both concepts involve the minor alteration
of an existing street and sidewalk facility
that do not have a significant effect on the
environment or on the flow of traffic, it is
anticipated that the concepts will be
categorically exempt from the provisions of
CEQA. In addition, the proposed project
will have beneficial environmental effects
as the quantity of storm water runoff will
be reduced and improved in quality before
being discharged into the Santa Monica Bay.

OPB Project progress. We appreciate your
continued support.
