Welcome
to the City of Santa Monica's Stop Gang Violence information
page!
Gang violence in Santa Monica is
a microcosm of the regional gang problem. The majority of gang
related homicides, attempt homicides and felonious assaults
experienced in Santa Monica in recent history are attributed to
gangs with roots in West Los Angeles, Venice and Mar Vista.
Using 2000 census data, it is illuminated that gang members
account for slightly more than one percent of the total population
of Los Angeles, approximately twenty (20) times the
concentration by population residing in Santa Monica.
The city began developing its comprehensive gang prevention strategy in 2003,
when the City Council selected as one of its three Community Priorities to
“Enhance the quality of life, safety, and community involvement of residents
of the Pico neighborhood.” In doing so, the city committed significant resources
to develop services that involve residents, businesses, nonprofit organizations,
government agencies, and religious and cultural institutions. This website was
created to further explain the comprehensive gang prevention strategy.
The city created the position
of Human Services Administrator for Neighborhood and Park Initiatives to implement
the Pico Initiatives. This includes oversight of programming at Virginia Avenue Park
and the Police Activities League and coordination of the city’s interdepartmental efforts
to address a range of issues in the Pico neighborhood.
